Agenda: Bill N. 69-12—Appropriation-Solid Waste
Utilities Committee Chair Tim Scott opened the hearing on Bill No. 69-12 by calling
upon City Controller Mark Neal for a presentation. Mark explained this was a bill
requesting an appropriation approval of$242,500 from the Solid Waste Fund#610.
Mark began by introducing Matt Chlebowski, Director of South Bend Central Services
and Andre Price, Manager of the Bureau of Solid Waste who then proceeded to explain
the request.
Matt went first explaining the City was purchasing four new propane gas fueled solid
waste trucks this year and plans to buy three more next year. For re-fueling the city
wants to purchase a low-pressure refueling skid. Meanwhile the city will continue to
look for a partner, public or private, to build a high-pressure rapid refueling station. This
is all part of the City's "green" initiatives. The estimated payback on propane powered
vehicles is currently projected to be five years.
Andre Price the Manager of Solid Waste said $39 dollars was needed to cover costs
incurred by switching dump sites from Michigan to Greentech in South Bend. Also the
City was asking to spend $52 thousand for a front-end loader. Currently the City leases a
loader fro $2500 per month.
Oliver Davis moved to send the bill favorably, Karen White offered a second. All
supported.
There being no further business to come before the committee at this time, Chairperson
Scott adjourned the meeting at 4:03 p.m.
