SOUTH BEND, IN Re: A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, IN SUPPORT OF PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER AS HOPE FOR THE DAY'S 2021 NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AND ACTION MONTH Dear Council Members: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death, not only in ithe United States, but also worldwide. In 2019, there were an estimated 1.38 million suicide attempts in the United States with more than 47,000 deaths, equaling 130 suicides a day. Hope for the Day is a non-profit movement empowering the conversation on proactive suicide prevention and mental health education. Its work is represented in all 50 states, 26 countries and 1 7 different languages. This proposed resolution calls on the Mayor to support Hope for the Day's mission by proclaiming September as Suicide Prevention and Action Month in South Bend and joining with local mental health partners to work to eliminate the stigma of mental health issues. We ask that this proposed resolution be filed and placed on the Health and Public Safety Standing Committee agenda for consideration at its May 24, 2021 meeting and then considered by the full Council at its meeting on the same date.
