My contractor had 2nd thoughts about installing the new portico ON the non‐original concrete steps that are there. He believes that settling (although not evident at this time) could risk the build of the portico that we install over the entry way. Plans that were approved call for standing the posts ON the steps (as shown in the 1980's images). He is suggesting that we remove the concrete steps (they are not attached to the house) and build the wooden decking that is like the original instead (as in the 1890's and 1905 images). It will be placed on/in freeze‐line footers, so it won't move. It would match the original images/structure better anyhow. Cosmesis will still be achieved as previously described/approved. Only the base changes. If this calls for reapplying, I understand. If it also calls for board, I further understand. I feel awkward since this could have been decided beforehand, yet I see the validity in all of the ways proposed. David Visser David A. I I REC'D 3/1/2021 AT - No. 176797 CREDIT CARD PorticoGoal: Goal: We wish to re-install the front entry portico on the Kownover Farmstead property. Rationale: To restore the original appearance of the entry portico, in pursuing our main goal of continually, but reasonably, striving to restore the property. We do not intend this door for routine ingress/egress. The intention is purely archetectural. Style discussion: 1893 photo of front of home showing portico One historic photo in my possession shows a portico in plain form. A later photo (1980) shows a more ornate style that is somewhat reflective of Victorian flavor. I propose a restoration of the original shape and tone of the portico that appears in the oldest photo on record (1893), an enlargement of which is attached below. Characteristics of the right portico construction: As presented in the design, only weather proofing needs additional consideration. Ideally, rainwater mitigation must be addressed. The original photos don’t show sufficient detail to indicate if there were downspouts or were just pitched to direct water runoff to the sides. The original home roof line images, however do show downspouts. Placement The photographs do not show the current concrete steps, but instead a wooden deck. The 80’s photo shows the portico standing on the steps. Those impressions are visible on the current steps. We plan to have the posts resting on the 2nd to top step as in that photo. Attachment to the front of the home will be done in alignment with the location of the attachment in the 1893 and 1905 photos. Design The roof will be flat with unnoticeable slight slope away from the house and imperceptible slope to the sides as well. It will be rubber and not visible. A small lip will serve as water directing to the runoff drains which shall be PVC pipe within the two posts away from the home, opening at the bottom and shedding the water away from the step. Every effort will be made to mimic and reproduce the appearance of the original portico. The main structure will be constructed of wood and handcrafted where necessary to create original appearance. Remnant pieces and pitch that are on the face of the home shall be carefully removed. We have consulted with Ross VanOverburghe regarding masonry integrations (as well as removing concrete tuck points used for repair in the past) and will respect proper securing. Flashing will again be invisible to the ground level eye, and will be done appropriately and with water security in mind. Part of this invisibility will be the skirt of the upper portico which is above the roof line of the portico flat section. Detail of Base and Roof line Electrical Detail Photos do not indicate if there was a front porch light or not. Remembering that electric didn’t come to the home until after the 1900 World’s Fair in Chicago, all electrical fixtures adorning the home were added later. We request permission to place a vintage-style iron or similar light on the inside of the skirt of the portico.
