DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT , EMERGENCY SHELTER GRANT PROGRAM STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND INTENT: In order to deliver services to homeless individuals within our community, the City of South Bend received funds from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development for the delivery of such services through the development of a shelter/multi-service center by the Council of Providers of Services to the Homeless , Inc. The funds appropriated in this ordinance will aid in defraying the cost of rehabilitation of the shelter site at 305 S. Michigan Street. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana: Section I. The sum of $53 , 000. 00 is hereby appropriated and allocated among accounts as set forth below: PROJECT NO. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act of 1987 to fund homeless shelter activities. A coalition of providers of services for the homeless have joined forces and have developed a plan for a shelter/multi-service center, which will be located at 805 S. Michigan St. The Council of Providers of Services to the Homeless , Inc. (CoPOSH) , an Indiana not for profit corporation, currently owns the S. Michigan St. property. In order to assist in defraying a portion of the cost of adapting the Michigan St. site to a shelter/multi-service center, the funds obtained through the Emergency Shelter Grant Program will be allocated to CoPOSH by the City of South Bend, if the attached ordinance is approved.
