AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE ZONING ORDINANCE,
AND ESTABLISHING A HISTORIC LANDMARK FOR
PROPERTY LOCATED AT 609 PORTAGE AVE. IN THE
CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph
County has petitioned for the designation of the following described real
estate as an Historic Landmark under Ordinance No. to
wit: as amended,
Lot 3 and 1/2 Vac. Alley
F. W. Keller Sub.
The improvements located upon said land can be commonly described
as 609 Portage Ave. hereinafter referred to as the "PROPERTY ".
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph
County has recommended the designation of the PROPERTY as an Historic
Landmark.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA:
SECTION 1
That the above described PROPERTY be, and it is hereby designated and
established as an Historic Landmark under Ordinance No. as amended.
SECTION 2
That this ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its
passage by the Common Council, approval by the Mayor and legal publication.

I, the undersigned property owner, hereby grant the Historic
Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County
the permission to have the building or buildings located at:
609 Portage Avenue, South Bend, Indiana
Township of Portage, County of St. Joseph
declared an architectural and/or historical landmark under
ordinance.
I do also approve of the classification of this building/build-

The Free Classic house at 609 Portage was built for real
estate deveroper Fred- w . -Keller ( 187z-1959 ) iii 1905 . The house
was designed by South Bend architect Walter W . Schneider
( 1868-195/ ) . Schneider was responsible for malty locally
significant buildings including the Natatorium , River Park
Theater and- various homes and churches . Fred W . Keller and Samuel
Good platted this addition in October of 1903 . Keller sold the
other lots in the subdivision , retaining lot 3 as the site for
his new family home .
Fred Keller was born on September 16 , 1872 in German
Township . He attended Valparaiso University and later studied it
the civil engineering program at the University of Miehiyaii . He
became South Bend 's Assistant Civil Engineer in 1894 and helpec
develop numerous local projects . He was elected mayor of SouLt
Bend on the Progressive ticket in 1913 . He is best known as
founding partner , with Leslie Whitcomb , of Whitcomb and Keller ,
real estate firm founded in 1893 responsible for the construction
of thousands of homes in South Bend .
The Kellers sold the house in 1920 to Emilyn H . and John A ,
stoeckley . John stoeckley was a nationally known oral suryeoii
with a practice in South Bend consisting primarily of oral
exodontia . He was also a member of the surgeons staff at St .
Joseph Hospital and officer and member of several local , state
and national professional organizations .
He was born in Monroeville , Ohio on May 20 , 1870 . He studied
pharmacy at western Reserve Lollege in Cleveland , Ohio and was
employed in that field until 1893 when he entered Chicago School
of uental surgery . Stoeckley graduated with honors in 1896 and
came to South Bend where he opened his first office in the Oliver
opera house block . He liter practiced on West WasliifiyLoii and in
the J .M .S . Building . He married Emelyn Hinkle of Muncie , Indiana
on June 18 , ivo2; they had three children , Hildegarde , Marion and
John .
John stoeckley died in September , 1928 . Emilyn sold the Mouse
the following year to Emily and Hans Fick . The Fick family owned
the house into the late 1960 's . When he and his spouse purc.hased

this house , Hans Fick was a partner in the accounting firm of
Willet , Fick and Wharton . He was born on March 25 , 1880 in
Blaubeuren , Wuerttemberg , Germany . Hans came to South Bend in
1907 . He was then employed as an auditor for Northern Indiana
Railway Company . Hans married Emily Johnson in 1908 . The couple
then moved to Fort Wayne , Indiana and later Grand Rapids ,
Michigan before settling here in 1922 . Fick was then associated
with Reed and King , Incorporated , later acquiring the firm as
part of the aforementioned partnership in 1925 . In 1936 he opened
his own accounting firm in the J .M .S . Building . Hans died in
October of 1941 .
Emily Fick remained in the home until her death in the
spring of 1953 . She was born in South Bend on September 8 , 1877 ,
the daughter of Dr . and Mrs . Henry Webb Johnson . Her father was
pastor of the local First Presbyterian Church from 1889 to 1912 .
Emily was an 1898 graduate of Fanny Hall in Lake Forest ,
Illinois .
After Emily Fick 's death her son , Henry J . Fick , resided in
the house . Like his father , Henry was employed as a certified
public accountant. He lived here into the 1960 's; the house was
then owned briefly by others before becoming the South Bend
Conservatory of Music in 1972 .
The Conservatory was originally founded in 1906 by Professor
Milton B . Griffith primarily as a school for musical training .
Dr . Griffith described the institution as a means of proving that
the city was "artistically inclined" and was not only "absorbed
in commercialism . " By 1909 the school had a large staff with
departments of piano, violin , vocals , theory and sight-reading ,
and expression and also ran a bureau responsible for arranging
local recitals and concerts . The school was first located in the
Toepp Building on South Main Street , where they gradually
acquired classrooms , a recital hall and other accommodations . The
Conservatory later moved to 202 South William before relocating
at this site .
Ownership and management of the institution had transferred
to Monica and Fred H . Ingersoll in the 1950 's . The Ingersolls
made this their home as well as a place to operate their school
of music . Monica Ingersoll was born on September 28 , 1897 in
Morris Run , Pennsylvania and lived in South Bend most of her
life . She was a graduate of Memorial Hospital School of Nursing .
Monica died in September of 1979 , her husband Fred died sometime
in the 1970 's ( biographical information unavailable ) .
The house was purchased in 1990 by Tab Roehrs, who remains in
1991 as owner and occupant .
