2005 South Bend Common Council
The September 12, 2005 meeting of the Public Works and Property Vacation Committee was
called to order by its Chairperson, Council Member David A. Varner at 4:20 p.m. in the Council
Informal Meeting Room
Persons in attendance included Council Members Dieter, Pnzzello,Kelly, Varner,Kuspa,White
and Rouse; Citizen Member Martha Lewis, Director of Public Works Gary Gilot, Rita Kopala,
Executive Director of the Department of Community and Economic Development Sharon
Kendall,Building Commissioner Don Fozo,Don Inks,Mike Teeter, City Clerk John Voorde and
Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand,Council Attorney.
Dr. Varner noted that the Committee members included Council Members Rouse, Puzzello,
White and himself.
Dr. Varner then called for a presentation Bill No. 48-05 which is a request to vacate a portion of
an alley which is located south of Calvert Street From Franklin Street of the first north/south
alley located in the Shively's Addition. He noted that the request received a favorable
recommendation from the Board of Public Works (copy attached).
The petitioner,Mike Teeter,of 1903 Franklin stated that the alley in question is grown over with
trees and weeds. He plans to landscape the area if approved.
No one from the public spoke in favor or in opposition to the Bill.
Council Member Kuspa noted that he had difficulty locating the alley in question. Mr. Teeter
provided a better map to him of the area in question. Council Member Kuspa stated that he
eventually found the alley and spoke in favor of the vacation request.
Council Member Puzzello then made a motion, seconded by Council Member Rouse that Bill
No. 48-05 be recommended favorably to Council. The motion passed.
There being no further business to come before the Committee, Dr. Varner adjourned the
meeting at 4:23 p.m.
