HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005 Annual Report - Information & TechnologyW 1111 III/ W". .... — 2005 Annual Report of the Information and Technology Committee of the South Bend Common Council Date: December 6, 2005 To: The South Bend Common Council The Office of the City Clerk From: 5th District Council Member David Varner, Chairperson Information and Technology Committee I am submitting the following Annual Report of the activities of the Council's Information and Technology Committee which is a requirement of § 2-10 (i)of the South Bend Municipal Code. Duties: The Information and Technology Committee is charged with "overseeing the various activities of the City's Division of Information Technologies in the Department of Administration&Finance so that the City of South Bend remains competitive and on the cutting edge of developments in this area. Reviewing and proposing upgrades to computer systems and wplmites,...deyloping availability & access to GIS data and related technologies are just some of iti many activities" 'Members: There 3 werf four (4) Council Members on this Committee, namely: Tianof y Rouse,Vtc l airliersom, Derek D. Dieter, Roland Kelly and myself. i '-lVfeetings_ This- ear the held only one (1) Committee meeting, compared to the six (6)..mee* gs of last year 1 k Activities: Our January 26, 2005 committee meeting was held so that St. Joseph Valley Metronet, Inc. would provide a power point presentation and briefing to the Council. A copy of that presentation in on file in the Office of the City Clerk. That meeting was following by a Saturday Informal Meeting held on April 9, 2005 in the Council 2005 Information and Technology Committee Annual Report December 6, 2005 Page 2 Chambers where members of the South Bend Common Council, representatives of Metronet, Inc., and county officials met. I have also placed on file in the Information and Technology folder in the Office of the City Clerk, copies of the following documents received from Gary Gilot: • Reciprocal License Agreement between the city and St. Joe Valley Metronet, Inc. dated March 14, 2005 • IRS Form 990 Filing of St. Joe Valley Metronet, Inc. for 2004 Recommendations for 2006: If I continue to Chair the Information and Technology Committee in the new year, I would recommend that we focus upon: • Looking into contracting with a company /agency to develop an effective, comprehensive, informative and inter - active City Council website which is regularly updated in a timely manner, and which would be directly linked to the City of South Bend website Looking into improved ways for the Council's records, which are housed in the Office of the City Clerk, to be accessed on line, including but not limited to regular and special meeting minutes, committee minutes, ordinances, resolutions, annual reports, forms for requests for vacations of public ways, forms for rezonings, forms for annexations, forms tax abatements, etc. The City of South Bend needs to prioritize its technology needs in order to remain competitive in the information market. I look forward to meeting with M. Catherine Fanello who oversees Information Technologies, so that we may jump -start these activities. Thank you.
