2005 South Bend Common Council
The October 10, 2005, meeting of the Community and Economic Development Committee was
called to order by its Chairperson, Council Member Ann Puzzello at 4:18 p.m. in the Council
Informal Meeting Room.
Persons in attendance included Council Members Puzzello, Pfeifer, Kirsits, Kelly, Kuspa,
Varner, and Rouse; Mayor Stephen Luecke, Citizen Member Martha Lewis, Mrs. Kopola, Public
Works Director Gary Gilot, Sharon Kendall, Pam Meyer, City Controller M. Catherine Fanello,
City Clerk John Voorde, Jamie Loo of the South Bend Tribune and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand,
Council Attorney.
Council Member Puzzello then called for a presentation on Bill No. 05-122 which would support
the continuation of the South Bend Enterprise Zone.
Pamela C. Meyer, Director of Community Development, made the presentation. She noted that
the resolution is required as a result of a new state law which took effect on July 1st. It requires
all communities which have existing Zone communities to recommend either continuing their
existence or their termination with such action required to take place before the end of the year.
In response to a question from Dr. Varner, Ms. Meyer stated that this is not an annual
requirement.
Council Member Kuspa made a motion, seconded by Council Member Kirsits that Bill No.
05-122 be recommended favorably to Council. The motion passed.
Under miscellaneous business, Council President Pfeifer noted that she may have a person from
Ivy Tech who would be interested in sitting on the UEZ Board.
There being no further business to come before the Council, the meeting was adjourned by
Council Member Puzzello at 4:21 p.m.
