The Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St.
Joseph County has approved the following work:
Renewed 10/14/2020, with additional approval for pointing of
front and rear of house.
Original Approval:
Replace two flat sections of roof (above garage and above
sunroom) with new deck, rubber membrane, wood handrails,
and flashing tying into main roof. Replace missing shingles, add
ice/water shield (where needed) on main roof. Replace gutters
(where needed). Tuckpoint chimney. Replace concrete walkway,
steps, and sidewalk with in-kind concrete and brick material.

Regulations pertaining to the Historic Preservation Commission are
found in Chapter 21 (Zoning), South Bend Municipal Code and Chapter
26 of the St. Joseph County Code.
The issuance of this certificate does NOT in any manner, release
the recipient from the responsibility of complying with the requirements
of the zoning ordinances, building codes, safety codes, ADA or other
requirements of the City of South Bend, the County of St. Joseph, the
State of Indiana, or the United States Federal Government.
This certificate is good for one year from the date of issuance and
is effective from the date entered herein. Plans are on file and open for
public inspection at the office of the Historic Preservation Commission of
South Bend and St. Joseph County, 227 West Jefferson Blvd., Suite 1400
S, South Bend, Indiana, during normal business hours.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Certificates of Appropriateness are good for one year. Renewal of projects is
allowed when the project takes longer than anticipated and the project complies with the standards and
guidelines. From our records, COA #2016‐1003 was issued in October of 2016 that approved the following work:

I called and left a message. We need some work done on our house and need a certificate of appropriateness. We had
one from Oct 2014 but not all of the work was completed. We need to replace the concrete walkway, steps, porch and
sidewalk with in‐kind concrete and brick; repair windows, finish work on the deck facing the river, and tuckpointing
around the house. Is this the only permit that I need?
