Dear Councilmen:
The Department of Public Works is requesting your approval of
the attached ordinance appropriating funds from the Local Roads and
Street Fund to various projects . These projects are:
Project #9004 - Arterial Signal Modernization - $340,000
This project is Phase II of the signal modernization project
by which we are systematically upgrading all signals in South Bend
and connecting each signal by way of fiber optic cables . The new
signals will be more responsive to traffic needs . The $340 ,000
represents the local match of 20% of project costs .
Project #9262 - Paving and Slurry - $521,000
These funds will be used to buy materials to be used to pave
and slurry seal the many streets in South Bend in need of
maintenance.
Project #9261 - Street Improvements - $120 ,000
Approximately $100 ,000 will be used to repair various concrete
streets . $10 ,000 is to be used to repair the Bendix/Cleveland Road
intersection and $10 ,000 is to be used to design a traffic signal
at the Western and Scott Street intersection. Traffic counts and
pedestrian volumes warrant a signal installation.
