Persons, partnerships, corporations, associations, or joint ventures awarded a contract by the City of South Bend through its agencies, boards, or commissions shall not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment in the performance of a City contract with respect tohire, tenure, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, or any matter directly or indirectly related to employment because of race, sex, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, age or disability that does not affect that person’s ability to perform work. Bidders shall demonstrate good faith efforts to have active participation from MWBEs on this Project and supply written documentation evidencing such efforts by using Form MWBE-2.0, Evidence of Good Faith Efforts and Form MWBE-2.1, MWBE Contacted. Such documentation shall include, but is not limited to, the following items: a.A listing of all MWBEs contacted including: (1) the name and address of the MWBE; (2) the date of contact; (3) the type of contact (i.e., phone call, written solicitation, etc.); (4) the nature or type services or goods requested; and (5) the result of the contact. b.Written evidence of outreach and copies of email exchanges inviting and receiving quotes or other responses from MWBEs or other documentation of efforts to encourage and secure competitive quotes from MWBE and local businesses to be included in the benefits of building this Project. c.Written documentation of letters of introduction, invitations to forging majority/minority strategic alliances for capacity building, including but not limited to, mentoring, extensions of assistance on payroll, insurance, bonding, line of credit, technical skills or business skills. Version 2/14/2020Public Works Quote DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA SPECIAL PROVISIONS OLIVE ST STATION ROOF REPAIR Project No. 120-028 I. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Work to be performed shall include furnishing all labor, services, materials, insurance, labor and equipment to provide and install the Olive St Station Roof Repair project including, but not limited to, facia and gutter repair, remove clay tile, replace damaged substrate, and replace clay tile, according to the intent of the plans and specifications. The project site is located at the southwest corner of Olive Street and Sample Street in South Bend, Indiana. II.PREVAILING SPECIFICATIONS AND DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS The City of South Bend's PREVAILING SPECIFICATIONS, most recent version, and DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS, most recent version, are to be used on this project. Each Quote provider is specifically instructed to become completely familiar with the most recent version of the PREVAILING SPECIFICATIONS and the DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS prior to submitting a Quote. Wherever the PREVAILING SPECIFICATIONS refer to “State Specifications,” it shall mean the 2020 INDOT Standard Specifications for the letting effective after September 1, 2019. These SPECIAL PROVISIONS will list only "Additions" or "Deletions" to the PREVAILING SPECIFICATIONS and are to be used only in conjunction with the PREVAILING SPECIFICATIONS. In the event of conflict between the SPECIAL PROVISIONS and the PREVAILING SPECIFICATIONS, the SPECIAL PROVISIONS will govern. III.TERM "OR EQUAL" A. Prevailing Specifications: None B. Additions: 1.Where the term "or equal" is used in these specifications, the Quote provider deviating from specified item shall file with his/her Quote a letter fully explaining and justifying his/her proposed article or equal. Additions: 1.Contractor agrees to indemnify, defend and hold harmless the City of South Bend, its agents, officers and employees, from all costs, losses, claims and suits, including court costs, attorney fees, and other expenses, arising from or out of the negligent performance of this Contract by Contractor, or because of arising out of any defect in the goods, materials or equipment supplied by the Quote provider. VI.INSURANCE A. Prevailing Specifications: 2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Section 103 B. Additions: 1.All Contractors and subcontractors doing business with the City of South Bend shall present a Certificate of Insurance showing coverage in the following minimum amount: a.General Liability: Premises-Completed Operations or Products, Bodily Injury and Property Damage Combined Single Limit - $5,000,000. b.There shall be no exclusion for explosion, collapse or underground hazard. c.Workmen's Compensation: Statutory State of Indiana Employer's Liability - $100,000. d.Auto Liability: Bodily Injury and Property Damage Combined Single limit - $1,000,000 e.City of South Bend shall be named as additional insured on the Certificate of Insurance. VII.CONTROL OF WORK A. Prevailing Specifications: 2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Section 105 B. Additions: 1.The complete responsibility for this project lies with the Director of Public Works of the City of South Bend, Indiana acting through his authorized representatives. 2.Construction Engineering - The Contractor shall provide all the necessary, qualified personnel, equipment and supplies to perform all work required under this item. There will be no direct payment for this item. 3.The contractor is responsible to maintain the site which includes but is not limited to; dust control, site security, erosion control, and protecting adjacent properties. 4.Work hours for the Project shall be from 7:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. No work shall be permitted on weekends, Holidays, or after hours unless approved Version 7/01/2016 Special Provisions - 2 by the City of South Bend Department of Public Works. VIII.LEGAL RELATIONS A.Prevailing Specifications:2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Section 107 B. Additions: 1.The Owner, where mentioned in these documents, is the City of South Bend. The Engineer, where mentioned in these documents, is Jones Petrie Rafinski, Corp. 2.The Contractor shall apply for and obtain any and all required permits for the work from local, state, and federal agencies and shall comply with permit requirements, including the St. Joseph County / City of South Bend Building Department. 3.If the Contractor awarded this contract is not a resident of Indiana, within thirty days, the Contractor shall provide the Engineer with proof that the Contractor is duly licensed, qualified and registered with the Secretary of State of Indiana to engage in business within the State of Indiana. 4.The Contractor shall comply with all provisions of Indiana Code 5-16-13, as amended. The Owner reserves the right to immediately terminate the public work project awarded should the Contractor be found to be in violation of any provision of Indiana Code 5-16-13 and such violation shall result in the forfeiture of Contractor’s performance bond to the Owner. IX.SUBMITTALS A. Prevailing Specifications: 2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Section 106 B. Additions: 1.Submit four (4) copies or an electronic version of the submittals for all equipment or materials used in this project to the South Bend Department of Public Works for approval. All submittals must be delivered within 7 calendar days from the notice to proceed. 2.The Department of Public Works will review and return two (2) copies or an electronic version of the submittals within five (5) working days. 3.The review of the submittal information by the Department of Public Works is to facilitate the satisfactory acceptance of the equipment. This review shall neither relieve the contractor from the responsibility for deviations from the Specifications, nor from errors and omissions in the shop drawings or literature. Parts found not meeting the requirements of these Specifications shall be removed, repaired or replaced at no cost to the OWNER. 4.Submittals shall include complete manufacturer’s descriptive information and shop drawings for all the parts furnished under this contract. 5.Upon completion of project, the Contractor will supply one (1) conformed set of all submittals to the City of South Bend. X. PROSECUTION AND PROGRESS A. Prevailing Specifications: 2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Sec. 108 B. Additions: Version 7/01/2016 Special Provisions - 3 th 1.The project will have a completion date of November 20, 2020 for all work. The contract time will start when the Notice to Proceed is delivered and signed. 2.The City, Engineer, and Contractor will hold a pre-construction meeting following award of the contract. The date of the Notice to Proceed will be agreed at that meeting. 3.Contractor shall provide a schedule to the Owner prior to beginning any work on the site. XI.CHANGE OF CONTRACT TIME A. Prevailing Specifications: 2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Section 108 B. Additions: 1.The Contract Time may only be changed by Change Order. Any Claim for an extension in the Contract Time shall be based on written notice delivered to the Department of Public Works within seven (7) calendar days of the occurrence of the event giving rise to the claim. Notice of the extent of the claim with supporting data shall be delivered within fourteen (14) calendar days after such occurrence unless an official of the Public Works Department allows an additional period of time to ascertain more accurate data. The Contract Time will be extended in an amount equal to time lost to delays beyond the control of the Contractor if a claim is made in accordance with this provision. Such delays shall include acts of neglect by the Public Works employees, or to fires, flood, labor disputes, epidemics, abnormal weather conditions, governmental procedures, or acts of God. 2.Unless otherwise provided, the Contract time is based upon normal weather conditions. An extension is granted for weather conditions significantly more severe than normal if the Contractor demonstrates to the satisfaction of the City that the delay in the progress of the work was due to such weather. The basis to define normal weather with be the data compiled by the United States Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). 3.No extension of time will be granted if the Contractor, by his/her/its own action or inaction, including fault or negligence of Contractor’s subcontractors, caused the delay, or for which any remedies are provided under any other provision of this agreement. 4.The grant of an extension of time under this Section in no way constitutes a waiver by the City of any rights or remedies existing under this contract at law or in equity. XII.DEFAULT AND TERMINATION A. Prevailing Specifications: 2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Section 108 B. Additions: 1.Events of Default shall include Contractor’s failure to perform any of its obligations under this contract including failure to commence work at the time specified, failure to perform the work in accordance with these specifications, unauthorized discontinuation of the work, failure to carry out the work in a manner acceptable to the City, failure to observe Federal, State, or local laws or regulations, and failure to comply with any other term of this contract. 2.If an Event of Default occurs, the City shall provide Contractor written notice and may permit Contractor ten (10) calendar days after the date of the notice to cure the default. If the default is not cured within the ten (10) day cure period, the City may at any time thereafter terminate this contract in which case the termination shall be final and effective. Version 7/01/2016 Special Provisions - 4 3.Upon an Event of Default, the City may invoke the following remedies in addition to those remedies provided under separate provisions of this contract, the right of set-off against any payments due or to become due to the Contractor against the retainage, the right to take over and complete the Work. If the City notifies Contractor that City is invoking its right to complete the Work, all rights that the Contractor has in order under Contractor’s subcontracts are assigned to the City, subject to the City’s right to take assignment of all or only selected subcontracts at the City’s discretion. The sole obligation accepted by the City under such subcontracts is to pay for Work satisfactorily performed after the date of the assignment. In the event a conditional assignment has not been executed, the Contractor shall execute or cause to be executed any assignment, agreement, or other document that may be necessary in the sole opinion of legal counsel to the City’s Board of Public Works to evidence compliance with this provision. The Contractor shall promptly deliver such documents upon the City’s request. In the case of such assignment, unless otherwise agreed in writing, The Contractor remains liability to subcontractors for any payment already involved, and for any claim, suit or cause of action based upon or resulting from any error, omission, negligence or other breach of contract by the Contractor, its officers, employees, or agents arising prior to the date of assignment to the City. XIII.LIQUIDATED DAMAGES A. Prevailing Specifications: 2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Section 108 B. Additions: 1.The contractor shall proceed with the work at such rate of progress to ensure full completion within the Contract Time. It is expressly understood and agreed, by and between the Contractor and the Owner, that the Contract Time for completion of the work described herein is a reasonable time, taking into consideration the average climatic and economic conditions and other factors prevailing in the locality of the work, and excludes the time for unavoidable delays which were beyond the control and without the fault of the Contractor. 2.If the Contractor shall fail to complete the work within the Contract Time, or extension of time granted by the Owner, then the Contractor will pay to the Owner the amount for liquidated damages a sum of five hundred dollars ($500.00) for each calendar day that the Contractor shall remain in default after the time of completion stipulated in the Contract Documents. 3.The Contractor shall not be charged with liquidated damages or any excess cost when the delay in completion of the work is due to the following and the Contractor has promptly given written notice of such delay to the Owner and Engineer/Architect. a.To any preference, priority, or allocation order duly issued by the Owner. b.To unforeseeable causes beyond the control and without the fault or negligence of the Contractor, including but not restricted to acts of God, acts of public enemy, acts of the Owner, acts of another Contractor in the performance of a Contract with the Owner, fires, floods, epidemics, quarantine restrictions, strikes, freight embargoes, and abnormal and unforeseeable weather. 4.The Contractor is hereby alerted that failure to submit shop drawings in a timely manner or failure to order materials in a timely manner, such that material manufacturing and delivery to the project site are delayed, will not be considered as unforeseeable causes in the determination of liquidated damages, extension of time granted by the Owner, or any excess cost. Version 7/01/2016 Special Provisions - 5 XIV.RETAINAGE AND FINAL PAYMENT A. Prevailing Specifications: 2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Section 109 B. Additions: 1.Payments will be made every thirty (30) calendar days. 2.Consistent with provisions of IC 36-1-12-14, the Board of Public Works shall retain a percentage of payments throughout the duration of the project. 3.Before final payment and retainage are released the Contractor must satisfy the following: a.All parts and labor meet requirements stated in the specifications. b.Provide copies of test reports or cut sheets on all materials supplied. c.Provide As-Built drawings in accordance with the City of South Bend Prevailing Specifications for Public Works. d.One (1) copy of the City of South Bend Completion Affidavit and one (1) copy of a Final Waiver of Lien. XV.WARRANTY A. Prevailing Specifications: None B. Additions: 1.All parts shall include the following: (i) Performance specifications; (ii) Bill of materials (iii) Warranties on all parts; and (iv) Installation and safety requirements. XVI.OTHER UTILITIES A. Prevailing Specifications: None XVII.DESCRIPTION OF WORK A. Prevailing Specifications: None B. XIX.MUNICIPAL OPERATIONS A. Prevailing Specifications: None B. Additions: 1.The Contractor shall coordinate with the City of South Bend Solid Waste, Olive Street office personnel, Waste Management, and other pickup services as requested to ensure collection services are maintained. 2.The Contractor shall be responsible for snow removal within the project limits and shall coordinate with City of South Bend Public Works. The Contractor is responsible for protecting his project site from excessive wear and tear during snow removal. Version 7/01/2016 Special Provisions - 7 XX.PUBLIC SAFETY A. Prevailing Specifications: 2020, INDOT Standard Specifications Sections 107.08 B. Additions: 1.It shall be the Contractor’s responsibility to secure the construction site against unauthorized entrance by persons and vehicles outside of and during work hours. This includes securing the site against dumping and public safety of the Owner, Owner’s representatives, pedestrians, bystanders and neighborhood residents. aintaining public safety will not be paid for directly, but shall be included in the cost of 2.M various items of the contract. Additions: 1.The Contractor shall be solely responsible for filing all paperwork required for City of South Bend permits, including but not limited to the City building permit. 2.The Contractor shall be required to observe and obey all requirements of the permits. Tuckpointing operations shall not be performed below 40 degrees F or above 95 degrees F. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 WATER: A. Water for chemical dilution and for pressure washing must be clean, potable and free of any chemicals such as iron or copper which may cause a surface disfigurement. 2.2 TUCKPOINTING MORTAR MATERIALS: A. Approved Manufacturers: 1. Jahn Restoration Mortars by Cathedral Stone Products, Inc. a. M110 Historic Pointing Mortars. B. Water: Clean and potable. 2.5 SEALANT MATERIALS A. Sealants: 1. Backer Rod: Closed cell polyethene foam equal to "HBR" backer rod as manufactured by Hercules, Inc., or approved equal. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 WORKMANSHIP A. Job Superintendent: This Contractor shall have a job superintendent (foreman), who is known for his integrity and expertise in this type of work, on the Project full time once the work is started. MASONRY RESTORATION REPAIR 04920-2 1. He shall have no less than five (5) years of field experience as a superintendent for the type of work specified and required by this Project. B. The highest standards of craftsmanship shall prevail from the start of the work to completion. 3.2 JOINT REMOVALS AND REPAIRS A. Remove all sealant in joints within the limits of restoration work. B. Remove mortar in all vertical and horizontal mortar joints within limits of restoration work by means of joint rakers, hand tools, grinders and/or pneumatic tools. Remove mortar to a min. depth of 2 - 2½" times the width of the joint to surface to a watertight condition. 1. Exercise care not to damage the edges and corners of the stone. 2. Bottom of joints shall be square cornered (perpendicular with the bed face of the stone). 3. All joints are to be cleaned and free of all clinging mortar from the edges of the joints. The joints shall be cleaned with air or flushed clean with water to ensure the adherence of the new mortar. C. Cut out damaged stone and replace with new stone. Replace missing brick with new stone, matching existing precisely. 3.3 TUCKPOINTING MASONRY A. Inspection: 1. Examine the wall surfaces to determine that joint removal work is complete, cleaning is complete, and joints are clean and free of loose materials, ready for installation of tuckpointing mortar. B. Mortar Mixes: 1. The mixing ratio is approximately 4½ - 5 parts powder to 1 part water by volume, depending on temperature and humidity. More water may be required as ambient temperature rises. The mixing may be done by hand, stirring until the mortar is thoroughly mixed. For best results, add the powder to the water slowly. The working time will vary, depending upon wind, temperature and humidity. Using excessive water in the mix may affect the color of the repair. C. Placing Tuckpointing Mortar: 1. Joints shall be wetted before installation of new mortar to prevent rapid setting, but not wet beyond saturation point of the brick. 2. Where existing mortar has been removed to a depth greater than one inch (1"), these deeper spaces shall be filled first, compacting new mortar in several layers. 3. Start placing new mortar from the back of the entire joint filling about a one-quarter (1/4") inch thick layer for several feet at a time. Pack tightly, MASONRY RESTORATION REPAIR 04920-3 allow to set to "thumbprint hardness" and apply another layer finally bringing flush to the exterior face of the brick surfaces. a. When placing in layers, it is imperative to allow each layer to become stiff before the next layer is installed. b. Pointing tools shall not exceed the width of the joint being tuckpointed 4. Tooling Joint: a. When the final layer is "thumbprint" hard, tool the joint with a convex runner tool to produce a dense, tight, flush slightly concave joint. b. Those joints which are to be recessed to receive other materials may be tooled smooth with the pointing tool. D. Final Wetting Cure: 1. Periodically, mist joints using clean water for at least a 72 hour period. E. Clean-up: 1. Remove uncured mortar from the perimeter of the joint before it dries, using clean water and a rubber sponge or a dry brush. Cured mortar may only be removed chemically or mechanically. 3.4 MISCELLANEOUS REPAIRS A. Fractures in Brick Masonry: 1. It is intended that the stress cracks which are in the exterior face brick and which range from 1/32" to 1/8" in width are to be injected with a silicone sealant to seal the joint and to match the brick color. 2. Those fractures which are larger than 1/8" are to be: a. Cut out following line of fracture, to a minimum depth of one and one-half inches (1-1/2"). Thoroughly clean each joint, removing all loose materials. Leave masonry sides of joints exposed and clean. b. If a fracture is due to structural movement, repair the fractures with a sealant of suitable color especially prepared as a flexible bonding material and in such a manner that expansion and contraction in these stress-inclined areas will still be permitted. c. If the fracture is not the result of structural movement, repair with special mortar mix containing suitable materials to match brick color. 3.5 SEALANT RESTORATION A. Removal Work: 1. Remove existing sealant in those joints which are currently caulked or sealed with sealant. B. Preparation of Surfaces: 1. A clean, dry surface is required. 2. Rake joints clean, brush and dry where necessary. MASONRY RESTORATION REPAIR 04920-4 3. Remove all oils, grease, wax, tar, asphalt, putty, caulking, mastic, laitance protective films, waterproofing, form release agent, paint, dirt, and other foreign matter. 4. Wipe surfaces with solvent wipe or cleaner as recommended by the sealant manufacturers. 5. Mask adjacent to joints, as required, in continuous strips. 6. Apply primer as recommended by sealant manufacturer. Note: Primer is not required with silicone or urethane on some surfaces. 7. Mortar replacement shall be complete and properly cured before placing sealant. C. Where spaces around openings are deeper than 3/8", they shall be packed with backer rod to this depth prior to filling with sealant. Larger openings may require other fill methods which should be submitted (prior to actual work) for approval. D. Where joints are subject to movement install backer rod. E. Sealant Color: 1. Color used shall match the materials being sealed and be approved by Architect/Engineer/Engineer in charge. F. Application: 1. Install backer rod in joints over 3/8" deep. a. Install backer rod with blunt instrument compressing 25% to 50% to fit joint, so joint depth is a minimum 1/4" or 50% of width. b. With silicone sealants, provide joint depth of ½". c. Do not stretch or twist backer rod while installing. d. Measure depth to crest of backer rod. 2. Apply sealant by gun with a tip size that will seal the opening or joint with one pass of the gun, giving a smooth finish free of wrinkles, voids or pockets. 3. Install sealant to fill joint and bring flush with stone or brick face and dress (tool) to a smooth, tight joint free of fins, smears or overlaps. 4. Tooling: a. Perform tooling within ten (10) minutes of sealant application. b. Compress sealant into joints with tooling rod. c. Neatly tool finish all joints on flush surface flush. d. Point internal corners with coving tool. 5. Remove masking materials immediately after tooling. G. Clean Up: 1. Clean adjacent surfaces immediately of excess materials and smears as work progresses. 2. Repair and correct all defective work. 3.6 ADJUST AND CLEAN: A. Replace/repair deteriorated areas of the existing wood deckings and provide a completely smooth substrate for installation of the membrane. 2. Cover imperfections with not less than 18 gage metal. 3. Scatter-nail or scatter-mop base sheet to the deck. 4. Install the top sheet of membrane in a flood coat of hot asphalt, smoothing out wrinkles and fishmouths. 5. Install ice and water shield as required by the Manufacturer. B. Flashing: 1. Install min. 20 oz. copper gutter lining. Extend up roof slope as required by clay tile manufacturer. 2. Install valley flashing as required by clay tile manufacturer. 3. Install step flashing, apron flashing and counter flashing around dormer and chimney as required by clay tile manufacturer. C. Tiles: 1. Headlap the tiles uniformly in each course to provide the designed installation. 2. In the field of the roof, fasten each tile. a. Install spot repair tiles using 12 gauge copper wire as directed by clay tile manufacturer. 3. Use mortar sparingly and, except as otherwise shown on the Drawings, only to provide proper bedding for tiles in special situations. 4. Do not mortar the interlocking joints between field tiles or the joints between ridge, hip, and rake tiles. 5. Use mortar where required as a bedding material, but take care to prevent slopping or mortar onto exposed portions of the roof and to prevent the accumulation of mortar where it could have a damming effect on drainage. 6. Firmly secure accessory tiles in place. 7. Perform cutting of tiles in a manner to provide neat edges and a uniformly straight line. CLAY ROOFING TILES 07321-3 8. Finish the clay tile roofs as a completely waterproof and weatherproof system requiring no further normal maintenance. 9. All tiles are to be carefully removed from the canopy walkway roof and stored for reuse. 3.3 CLEAN UP A. Promptly upon completion of this portion of the Work, remove from the site the tools, equipment, surplus materials, tile-ends, and debris resulting from the clay tile roof installation. 3.4 CLEANING A. PREPARATION 1. Protect people, vehicles, property, plants and all surfaces not set for cleaning from the product, splash, rinse, residue, fumes and wind drift. Test all surfaces that may come in contact for compatibility. Immediately rinse non-target materials with large quantities of water. Divert pedestrian and auto traffic if necessary. 2. No cleaning shall take place when temperatures are below 50°F. 3. Contractor may not walk on clay tile roofing during cleaning. B. APPLICATION 1. Prewet the surface with clean water. 2. Apply the appropriately diluted solution to surface using a brush or low- pressure spray. 3. Let the cleaner stay on the surface 1-10 minutes, based on testing. Gently scrub heavily soiled areas. NOTE: Do not let EK Zolo dry and reapply the cleaner in a gently scrubbing manner. 4. Rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 if necessary. C. CLEAN-UP 1. Compressible Foam Sealant: High-densityopen-cell urethane foam saturated with non-drying water repellent; pre-compressed in rolls or sticks; permanently flexible, mildew resistant and non-staining. 1. For vertical above grade applications: a. Select sizes so that the installed sealer is compressed as recommended by the manufacturer to provide a weather-tight seal. b. 2.7 SEALANT BACKERS A. manufacturer for specific use. B. Foam tubing joint filler: Flexible, non-absorbent, compressible neoprene, butyl or EPDM foam tubing, unless otherwise restricted by the sealant manufacturer; complying with ASTM D 1056; suitable for exposure to weather for an extended period and subsequent installation of sealant with no further preparation; size and shape as required to provide a weather seal. 2.8 PRODUCTS A. (Joints subjected to horizontal traffic): 1. Self-leveling, complying with ASTM C920-79, grade P, class 25. 2. Acceptable products: a. b. B. (Joints subject to extreme movement): 1. In concealed installations, and in partially or fully exposed installation where so approved by the Architect/Engineer, use standard gray or black sealant. 2.9 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS A. Primers: Use primes determined to be required by substrate testing for each particular installation. Primers used to be non-staining and shall be suitable for the installation and the substrate. B. Cleaners: As recommended by the sealant manufacturer, not damaging to the substrate. C. Masking Tape: Non-absorbent and non-staining type. D. Tooling Agents: Approved by the sealant manufacturer; non-staining to the sealant or the substrate. E. Provide other materials, not specifically described but required for a complete and proper installation, as selected by the Contractor subject to the approval of the Engineer. PART 3- EXECUTION 3.1 SURFACE CONDITIONS A. Examine the areas and conditions under which work of this Section will be performed. Correct conditions detrimental to timely and proper completion of the work. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Cleaning: Prior to the start of the sealer installation, clean out joints n accord with the recommendation of the sealer manufacturer and as follows: 1. Remove all material that could impair adhesion, including dirt, dust, coatings, paint, oil and grease. Exception: Materials tested to show acceptable adhesion and compatibility. 2. Dry out damp and wet substrates thoroughly. 3. Clean M-type and O-type substrates by suitable mechanical or chemical methods. 4. Remove loose particles by vacuuming or by blowing with oil-free compress air. B. Steel surfaces: 1. Steel surfaces in contact with sealant: a. Sandblast as required to achieve acceptable surface for bond. b. If sandblasting is not practical, or would damage adjacent finish, scrape the metal or wire brush to remove mill scale. SEALANTS AND CAULKING 07920-5 c. Use solvent to remove oil and grease, wiping the surfaces with clean white rags only. 2. Remove protective coatings on steel by sandblasting or by using a solvent which leaves no residue. C. Aluminum surfaces: 1. Aluminum surfaces in contact with sealant: a. Remove temporary protective coatings, dirt, oil, and grease. b. When masking tape is used for protective cover, remove the tape just prior to applying the sealant. 2. Use only such solvents to remove protective coatings as are recommended for the purpose by the manufacturer of the aluminum work, and which are non-staining. 3.3 INSTALLATION OF BACKUP MATERIAL A. When using backup of tube or rod stock, avoid lengthwise stretching of the material. Do not twist or braid hose or rod backup stock. B. Installation tool: 1. For installation of backup material, provide a blunt-surfaced tool of wood or plastic, having shoulders designed to ride on the adjacent finished surface and a protrusion of the required dimensions to assure uniform depth of backup material below the sealant. 2. Do not, under any circumstance, use a screwdriver or similar tool for this purpose. 3. Using the approved tool, smoothly and uniformly place the backup material to the depth indicated on the Drawings or otherwise required, compressing the backup material 25% to 50% and securing a positive fit. 3.4 PRIMING A. Use only the primer recommended by the manufacturer of the sealant, and approved by the Architect/Engineer for the particular installation, applying in strict Architect/Engineer. 3.5 BOND-BREAKER INSTALLATION A. Provide an approved bond-breaker where recommended by the manufacturer of the sealant, and where directed by the Architect/Engineer, adhering strictly to the installation recommendations as approved by the Architect/Engineer. 3.6 INSTALLATION OF SEALANTS A. Prior to start of installation in each joint, verify the joint type according to details on the Drawings, or as otherwise directed by the Engineer, and verify that the required proportion of width of joint to depth of joint has been secured. B. Equipment: SEALANTS AND CAULKING 07920-6 1. Apply sealant under pressure with power-actuated or manually-operated hand gun, or by other appropriate means. SEALANTS AND CAULKING 07920-7 2. Use guns with nozzle of proper size, and providing sufficient pressure to completely fill the joints as designed. C. Thoroughly and completely mask joints where the appearance of sealant on adjacent surfaces would be objectionable. D. thoroughly filling joints to the recommended depth. E. Tool joints to the profile shown of the Drawings, or as otherwise required if such profiles are not shown on the Drawings. 1. Provide uniformly smooth joints with slightly concave surface. 2. Clean adjacent surfaces free from sealant as the installation progresses, using solvent or cleaning agent recommended by the manufacturer of the sealant used. F. Cleaning up: 1. Remove masking tape immediately after joints have been tooled. 2. Clean adjacent surfaces free from sealant as the installation progresses, using solvent or cleaning agent recommended by the manufacturer of the sealant used. 3. Upon completion of the work of this Section, promptly remove from the job site all debris, empty containers, and surplus material derived from this portion of the work.
