Good Afternoon
This is great news..For the garage door, we will put just a basic white
garage door https://www.homedepot.com/p/Clopay‐Classic‐Collection‐8‐ft‐x‐7‐ft‐Non‐Insulated‐Solid‐White‐Garage‐
Door‐HDB‐SW‐SOL/204598365 . As far as the spindle/columns, we are going to keep them as they are...We are going to
fill the holes, scrape and paint with white to keep the originality of the home.. The entrance door to the garage is in
good shape, so we will not be replacing it at this time. I will be down to make the payment and any other additional
payments in the morning at the building in the morning..Please let me know if you have any questions and or anything
else that you need from me..Thank you for all your help. Have a great day

Ross was familiar with your project from talking to the contractor in the recent past so we probably won’t need a site
visit at this time. One last thing that came up in preliminary review is that there appears to be some original spindle
detail on the front porch atop the columns, will that remain/be repaired? This is going to be a great project! I plan to
issue the Administrative Approval once the door details are known. Did you have a chance to submit payment to the
Building Department? Thanks!

1. Siding: Has there been any exploration as to what siding exists underneath the asphalt and if it could be repaired (in
the case of original siding)? Please send specification or link for replacement asphalt siding (photo received). Is it the
entire area of the existing asphalt siding being replaced? or please specify where/how much replacement. We will
replace all the asphalt shingles. We were looking into fixing the shingles however we cannot purchase those shingles
anymore. It will be the top portion above the aluminum siding roughly 1700sqft of
siding. https://www.homedepot.com/p/GAF‐WeatherSide‐Profile12‐12‐in‐x‐24‐in‐Fiber‐Cement‐Siding‐Shingle‐18‐
Bundle‐2221000WG/202019843
2. Windows: Need documentation showing which existing windows are proposed for replacement, if they are original
has repair been considered, and specification or link for proposed replacement windows. You mention that there are
other replacement windows that these will match, perhaps convey that the new will produce a uniform aesthetic.
Windows on 1522 side are double hung vinyl windows, would like to make uniform all the way around the house. There
are 9 windows that need to be replaced. https://www.homedepot.com/p/American‐Craftsman‐35‐75‐in‐x‐49‐25‐in‐70‐
Series‐Pro‐Double‐Hung‐White‐Vinyl‐Window‐with‐Buck‐Frame‐3650786/204814597
3. Roof: What roof is exists now? Please link specification for new roof (is this a three tab or architectural shingle). It is
an architectural shingle roof, we will be keeping it the same, no change
4. Gutters: Specification please. There are currently gutters on the backside of the house but not all the way around.
We want to put gutters on the side on the home and downspouts to prevent any damage to the foundation
5. Garage door: You mention repair, is this for the overhead door or the boarded man door? For both doors, the door
that is on the garage now is broken. The overhead door is damaged to shreds. We will be replacing that with new.
I did my best to draw where the windows, siding and gutters will be replaced. I am not a sketch artist by any means.
Please let me know if you would like something different.
Russ, if you are available tomorrow I can have the contractor there or I can meet you there at any time.
I hope this covers everything.
Please let me know if there is anything else. Thank you

Hi Michelle. Thank you so much for taking on this project, it sounds like it will be a great improvement. I’ve had a

Please provide a site plan for the file that will convey where windows, gutters, and roof will be replaced.
Also, I would like to ask that the contractor and/or owner schedule a meeting with HPCs Site Inspector. Ross may be
available tomorrow (he is cc’d on this email) but please note that he will be out of the office for the next couple weeks
otherwise.
Upon receiving the additional documentation and report from HPC Site Inspector, we will determine if the project
qualifies for Administrative Approval (minor project in compliance with standards).
Thank you very much!

Greetings –
I have confirmed on the map of South Bend Historic Properties that 1520 Ottawa Court is located in the Lincoln Way
East Local Historic District. Please refer to the Lincoln Way East Standards when planning projects on a historic
designated property. To obtain approval on proposed projects at the property, please complete a Certificate of
Appropriateness application and checklist on page 3. The application and supplemental documents can be emailed
but the $20 payment can be mailed to HPC, County – City Building, 227 W Jefferson Blvd, Suite 1400S, South Bend, IN
46601 or hand delivered to the Building Department at 125 S Lafayette Blvd in an envelope labeled with HPC and the
property address. HPC preservation specialist and/or site inspector, both who are copied on this reply, are available
by appointment to meet with you on site if needed.
The property is rated non‐contributing in the DNRs Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. Minor projects that
comply with the Standards can usually issued by staff quickly as an Administrative Approval. If a project is major or
doesn’t comply with the Standards, a public hearing before the Historic Preservation Commission may be necessary.
From what you’ve described, and depending on the specifics, this project will likely be eligible for Administrative
Approval.
Please note that may links are embedded in this reply. Don’t hesitate to reach back out with questions.
Thank you,

Subject: Permits
Good morning,
I am trying to get a permit for a building we are trying to remodel 1520 Ottawa Ct South Bend. I am being told it is in
the historic district therefore I need to permissions before getting the permit.
We are looking to put overlay the roof, same shingles that are on there currently, paint the aluminum siding blue
(Notre dame blue) and replace the damaged siding at the top with similar siding. We also need to install newer
windows. It appears that the previous owner had started this process with the windows on half the house so we
would like to complete the rest of it. We essentially would like to keep the look of the house but make it look better.
What will I need to do to move forward with getting the permit and getting repairs done?
Thank you
