Agenda: Renaissance District Update—Scott Ford, Kevin Smith
This session of Henry Davis' Community&Economic Development Committee was
scheduled by Henry to inform the Council as to the vision and progress of South Bend's
Renaissance District. From his position as the City Council's representative on the
Redevelopment Commission Henry has become well aware of the tremendous economic
impact potential of the district. Because of that as well as an effort to more effectively
communicate to Council what the Commission is trying to do,Henry asked Kevin Smith
the main man behind the project to make the presentation. Kevin's brief presentation
relied primarily upon an overhead showing renderings of what the massive old
Studebaker assembly building sometimes referred to as the Ivy Tower Bldg. might
become. As stated, the potential economic impact is huge. Absent at least for now a
commitment for capital investment the concept may be stalled. Kevin Smith said the first
hurdle to overcome before acquiring the building makes economic sense would be to
resolve any environmental concerns. Moving forward is dependent upon that.
There being no further business to come before the committee at this time, Chairperson,
Henry Davis adjourned the meeting at 5:58 p.m.
Respectfully . miffed,
