Hammond -Nash RE: Meeting Schedule J 1) John Oxian has decided to cancel the regular December monthly HPC meeting, previously set for Monday, December 15, because there are no new Certificate of Appropriateness Applications filed, and no other business requiring a public hearing. His further message is: Merry Christmas! ! ! 2) In lieu of the full HPC meeting there will be a brief Historic Districts Committee Meeting at 4:30 Monday, December 15, in HPC offices, to count Edgewater Place Liaison election ballots. As you may imagine, having witnessed some of the scenes at HPC meetings, the question of liaison representation in Edgewater has many people very upset indeed. As you will recall, in every other district, the volunteers and nominations for liaison positions equaled or was less than the number of vacancies. In Edgewater Place, however, there were nine people nominated, of whom six are willing to serve, for two vacancies. Julie and I mailed out ballots shortly after the last HPC meeting, and we have received about 30 ballots back so far. We have received several inquiries about when the ballots would be counted, and the election decided, and we have told enquirers that it would be by the date of the December HPC meeting. Putting it off any longer would probably cause a riot. We also received several expressions of concern that we had not put a specific "due by" date on the ballot. While I think it would be truly silly for anyone to hold onto a ballot for over a month, and expect it to be counted, or to expect the HPC to hold the election open more than a month, we have nevertheless decided to respond to a concern expressed by several different people, and Wednesday we sent out reminders to everyone in the district to return their ballots, and also informed them of the date the ballots will be counted. 3) The Facade Easement Committee will meet at 630 West Washington Street, Tuesday, December 30, at 12:00. 4) The Historic Districts Committee will also meet on Thursday, January 8, at 4:30, in HPC offices, to review corrections to the first printer's proofs of the District Books for Lincolnway East, Taylor's Field, and Chapin Park. 5) Julie, Wayne, and I wish the happiest of Christmases to all of you. Usually, there would be only one elected each year, and that person would serve three years. However, this year there will be two Liaisons elected. The person who receives the most votes will serve a three-year term, ending in the fall of 2006, and the person with the second most votes will serve a two-year term, ending in fall of 2005. Of course, a popular and effective Liaison can always be reelected, especially after ashort term. Vote for at feast one, but not more than two, of the following people. Hammond -Nash RE: New Child Leave County personnel policy requires that I make a formal request for maternity leave ("New Child Leave", County Personnel Manual, p. 33), in writing, in advance of the expected date of the leave. After you (the HPC) endorse my request, the request must be submitted to the County at least 30 days before the leave is expected to begin. So here is my formal written request: I ask that the HPC approve 12 weeks of continuous New Child Leave for me, to begin effective the next business day after the birth of my child, expected to be sometime between February 28 and March 15. If I deliver in advance of the expected date, I will of course ask that my New Child Leave begin effective immediately. If I go past March 2 or 3 without delivering, I propose to - take a vacation or work a reduced schedule beginning then, using accrued "personal days" to do so. In that case I would ask that both the preliminary vacation schedule be approved, and also that my New Child Leave begin effective the date the child is born. As you know, I live close in town, and I expect to be available to Julie and to Wayne, or to any HPC member, should questions arise during my leave. Also, I have arranged with my mother-in-law that she will watch the child one afternoon a week during my New Child Leave, so that I may come into the office and keep up with matters there during that time. Julie.and Wayne are both well informed regarding office business and procedures, and I have no doubt of the two of them being able to handle anything likely to arise during the 12 weeks between approximately March 1 and the end of May.
