On the 6,000 gallon tank, the annual cost was $45 per ton if the tank was filled only once per year, $23 per ton when the tank is filled two times a year, and $17 per ton when the tank is filled three times a season. Repeating the same procedure on the 10,000 gallon tank gave per ton costs of $34, $17 and $11 for one, two or three fill- ings per year, respectively. You have to weigh these costs against the benefits of storing the fertilizer on- farm. If you can receive a lower price for your fer- tilizer by storing on farm, or you benefit from the convenience of having fer- tilizer on -hand when you need it, the investment in the diking and containment may pay off. Obviously the more fer- tilizer you can run through those tanks, the more you can justify the expense.
