the example, the tanks were
filled once, twice or three
times a year.
On the 6,000 gallon
tank, the annual cost was
$45 per ton if the tank was
filled only once per year,
$23 per ton when the tank
is filled two times a year,
and $17 per ton when the
tank is filled three times a
season. Repeating the same
procedure on the 10,000
gallon tank gave per ton
costs of $34, $17 and $11
for one, two or three fill-
ings per year, respectively.
You have to weigh these
costs against the benefits of
storing the fertilizer on-
farm. If you can receive a
lower price for your fer-
tilizer by storing on farm,
or you benefit from the
convenience of having fer-
tilizer on -hand when you
need it, the investment in
the diking and containment
may pay off.
Obviously the more fer-
tilizer you can run through
those tanks, the more you
can justify the expense.
