AN ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL. OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, APPROPRIATING MONIES:
WITHIN THE ZOO ENDOWMENT FUND TO BE USED FOR
CAPITAL PROJECTS AND/OR CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS AT THE
POTAWATOMI. ZOO, CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
FOR THE YEAR 1993
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND INTENT
The Common Council of the City of South Bend has determined it to
be in the best interest of the City of South Bend and to be in the
best interest of the City' s Park Department to authorize and
appropriate monies dispersed from the Dorothy Shanafelt Douglas Trust
and deposited into the Zoo Endowment Fund to be used "for the sole
and exclusive use and benefit of the Potawatomi Park Zoo" according
to the restrictions of the Dorothy Shanafelt Douglas Trust. The
Dorothy Sh.anafelt. Douglas. Trust provided cash distributions in 1991
and. 1992 totaling approximately $30,000 with subsequent annual
distributions forthcoming.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, AS. FOLLOWS:
Section I. The Dorothy Shanafelt Douglas. Trust monies deposited
into the Zoo. Endowment. Fund shall be and hereby are appropriated and
set apart for the capital projects specified herein below and
according to the restrictions of the Trust..
Capital Improvements utilizing funds from the Dorothy Shanafelt
Douglas Trust Fund..
1. Flamingo Winter Housing Building $ 4,505.00
2. Australian Bird. Barn 8,350.00
3 . Walk Through Free Flight Exhibit 4,645.00
4. Electrical Service for New Animal Barns 12,500.00
$30,000.00
Section II. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect
from and after its passage and approval by the Mayor.

RE: An Ordinance of the Common Council of the
City of South Bend, Appropriating Funds
Within the Zoo Endowment Fund
Dear Mr. Luecke:
I am attaching for filing, an ordinance of the Common Council
of the City of South Bend, appropriating $30 ,000 within the Zoo
Endowment Fund.
As you are aware, the City of South Bend was made a
beneficiary of the Dorothy Shanafelt Douglas Trust , a charitable
trust established in 1989 . Pursuant to the terms of the Trust ,
funds dispersed by the Trust to the City are "for the sole and
exclusive use and benefit of the Potawatomi Park Zoo. "
As you are also aware, the City has created a Zoo Endowment
Fund, into which Trust distributions have been deposited.
Deposits in the Zoo Endowment Fund now total $30 ,000 .

It is the recommendation and request of the Park Board and
Park Department that these funds be appropriated by the Council
for capital improvements at the Potawatomi Park Zoo, including
the following projects :
1 . Flamingo Winter Housing Building;
2 . Australian Bird Barn;
3 . Walk-Through Free Flight Exhibit; and
4. Electrical Service for New Animal Barns .
