APPLICATION FOR A — CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Written Description – 514 West Lasalle Carriage House
Existing Conditions
• Original intention was to repair doors and rehang with new hinges and replace glass as needed.
o Finding suitable hinges has been an obstacle. Bought expensive strap style hinges which
ended up being sloppy and poorly machined. Difficulty finding appropriate hinges to
support each door at ~160 pounds without astronomical cost ($300+ per hinge).
o Stress of the doors hanging on the old structure is a concern. Structure was leaning
towards the backyard 3-4” over 8’ height. Especially when combined with the
gentleness of an automatic operator, an overhead will put less stress on the structure
long-term.
o We have one child, another on the way, etc. Wish to have inside parking during the
winter and secure place for vehicle given issues with crime recently.
• Opening is 9’ wide by 7’ 8” tall. Doors are removed. The top of the door opening is currently cut
on a slant because the structure was leaning and they cut the opening to fit the sloping doors at
some point essentially.
• The existing carriage doors have numerous holes from old hardware and the existing hinges are
mismatched, with 3 likely being old. Two of newer hinges failed. Door has been poorly painted
over the years and might require complete rebuild by time the door is stripped to see what
we’re working with.
• The right side of the opening has a rotted out sill plate and rot at the bottom of the right king
and jack stud. Bottom of both doors have rot.
• The doors have 10 lites each. Of these panes, a couple where of newer thickness and a couple
were broken during removal. Don’t believe any were original. Glazing putty had gone bad so all
panes were removed.
Proposed Replacement
• Replace with Amana Model 103 overhead door constructed of marine-grade plywood core and
Hemlock trim.
• To be painted color-scheme with rest of carriage house and match house.
• Door is intended to be a 3-panel door with 16 lites total in the upper panel.
• Door will allow future remote operation for secure interior parking in the wintertime and a
weathertight seal to keep rodents out of structure. Options that were same price and would
have been less maintenance and better insulated were disregarded to help maintain whatever
character for historical carriage house was possible.

Proposed Door – Amana 103
Example of a painted Amana wood door of a different style.
4-Panel shown below. Purchasing 3 Panel so one less seem and glass portion is larger like above. Can
add faux carriage handles or strap hinges to mimic look of swing-out carriage doors.
