Dear Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County,
We would like to install a wood picket fence around our front yard. After 4 years in Chapin Park, we
have come to love the fenced front yards on our street and in the neighborhood, and are excited to add
to the beauty of our home with a front yard fence. Furthermore, in the summer of 2015, a historic
marker for our home—the former home of poet Kenneth Rexroth—was installed. The installation has
brought many visitors to the site, which is wonderful for the city and a joy for us lovers of history and
literature. Along with the beauty of a front yard fence, we will also appreciate the small deterrent for
people who come to the door thinking our home open for visitors as a historic site. Lastly, we have a
toddler who loves to be outdoors and we would appreciate his ability to play in the front yard more
safely.
We will install a severe weather white cedar picket fencing (3.5ftx8ft panels) in the French gothic style
around our front yard of 828 Park Avenue. We will install a gate as well across the front walkway to
separate the yard from the sidewalk. Our immediate neighbor (830 Park Avenue) has the same fencing
so we will match his. We will purchase the fencing from Lowe’s where we receive a veteran discount.
The fencing we plan to purchase is Item #156541 – Model #160274 Severe Weather White Cedar Spaced
Picket French Gothic Wood Fencing. We will paint the fencing white with exterior white paint also
purchased from Lowe’s. Richard Marcantonio (homeowner) will install the fencing. He has 4 years of
experience installing fencing.

We will fence three sides of the yard, as the left side is already fenced. The right side of the fence will
meet up with the front porch and we will landscape the space between the right side of the fence and
the brick driveway with low flowering plants; this space currently has a mulch covering (see photos for
reference). We will also install a gate of the same fencing materials across the front walkway separating
it from the sidewalk.
Thank you for your consideration.
We wish you peace and good health,
Lesley and Richard Marcantonio
