SUBJECT: Washington, LaPorte, Chapin Intersection Improvements

PURPOSE OF REQUEST:
We are requesting $400,000 from the River West TIF to fund intersection improvements for
two intersections on Washington Street. The two intersections are Washington / LaPorte and
Washington / Chapin.
The purpose of this project is to increase walkability and pedestrian safety at these
intersections by:
- Adding bump outs at Chapin and Laporte to reduce the crossing distance for
pedestrians, protect on street parking, improve sight lines and reduce vehicle
speeds.
- Removal of the right turn slip lane from Washington to LaPorte to slow traffic.
- Realigning LaPorte to intersect with Washington Street at a right angle.
- Reducing street maintenance costs through the reduction of pavement.
- Reducing stormwater into a combined sewer through the introduction of more
permeable surface.
