HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 0005 2020 Dolores Huerta Pavilion and FieldsRESOLUTION NO. 0005-2020 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF PARK COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, HONORING DOLORES CLARA FERNANDEZ HUERTA BY RENAMING THE PAVILION AND FIELD AMENITIES AT PULASKI PARK “DOLORES HUERTA PAVILION & FIELDS” WHEREAS, the Board of Park Commissioners (the “Board”) of the City of South Bend, Indiana (the "City"), pursuant to Indiana Code §36-10-4-9, has exclusive control of all property within the City used for park purposes; and WHEREAS, Pulaski Park, located at 1308 Huron St, South Bend, Indiana 46619, is a park owned and operated by the City through the Board and the City’s Venues, Parks & Arts Department (“Department”); and WHEREAS, there are pavilion and field amenities situated inside Pulaski Park (the “Park”); and WHEREAS, Dolores Clara Fernández Huerta (hereinafter, “Delores Huerta”) is an American labor leader and civil rights activist who, with Cesar Chavez, co-founded the National Farmworkers Association, later the United Farm Workers; and WHEREAS, Pulaski Park has become an important landmark for the Latinx and Hispanic communities of the City; and WHEREAS, representation in community landmarks and amenities is important for civic pride, a key attachment driver for long term community health and stability, and the recent improvement projects at the Park present an opportunity to bolster that investment and create lasting representation for the City’s Latinx and Hispanic communities and WHEREAS, in honor of Dolores Huerta’s dedicated service to the Latinx and Hispanic community and advocacy for workers’, immigrants’, and women’s rights, the Board in conjunction with Mayor James Mueller, desire to rename the pavilion and field at Pulaski Park “Dolores Huerta Pavilion and Fields.” NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PARK COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND AS FOLLOWS: 1. The pavilion and field amenities at Pulaski Park be renamed “Dolores Huerta Pavilion & Fields.” 2. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect upon its adoption by the Board.
