Sunday November 24th they are hosting a Thanksgiving Food Basket drive. They can use all the help they can get. They make food baskets and then deliver the baskets to some of the less fortunate community families. They are also doing a Toys for Tots drive. The press release for that is scheduled to be out November 22nd. The event is going to be on December 9th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Student Government and Athletic Department will be running that. It will be held at a Women's Basketball game. If you donate an unwrapped toy, you will get free admission into the game. There are then festivities afterwards with a Santa, cookies and hot chocolate. NOTRE DAME UPDATES/CONCERNS: Tim Sexton introduced himself. He announced that he had a few updates. A couple of these updates are on behalf of Marguerite Taylor. Turning Over A Leaf is a leaf pickup program that the Robinson Center coordinates with students. It happened two (2) Saturdays ago. They were able to knock out thirty-eight (38) homes. Most of that was done by students and then there were some kids from Niles High School that also volunteered. The construction for the new Robinson Community Learning Center is well underway. We will be in that building by August 1st of 2020. On December 7th, the Robinson Center will be having their auction. All are invited to attend. Proceeds from that auction go to providing opportunities for the Robinson Center children to go on trips within our country such as Nashville, Philadelphia, New York, and D.C. When they visit those communities, they also visit the higher educational institutions within those communities. It has been a great success and a wonderful experience for the children. Pam Blair introduced herself. She is with the KROC Institute of Notre Dame. She mentioned that she did not have many updates but that she had just gotten back from a large Sustainable Peace Conference. There were three to four hundred (300 —400) presenters there. In January, they are gearing up for MLK celebrations. There will be more to come. She also reiterated her request made at the previous CCAC meeting, inquiring about the traffic signal at the corner of Angela and Notre Dame Avenue. The KROC Institute has an enrolled student who is blind, and she would like to see what could be done about making that crossing more ADA accessible. Linde Hoffman introduced herself. She is the Chief of Staff for Notre Dame's Student Government. Looking into next semester, the Student Government is helping plan Walk the Walk Week which is during MLK Day week. There will be many events with that and there will be more updates to come. They are also doing a collaboration between Notre Dame, St. Mary's and Holy Cross. There are monthly meetings to try and work on community initiatives together. There is already a Back the Bend partnership evolving. There is a Saturday in late April where student volunteers from all three (3) campuses go into the community and in various organizations and helping out wherever as needed. Notre Dame Student Government also created a South Bend Adventure Guide which was distributed to all the campuses. It has all kinds of resources throughout South Bend as well as small businesses and restaurants. They are also hosting a Social Concerns Fair on January 21' on Notre Dame's Campus. Holy Cross and St. Mary's are collaborating on that as well. Jonathan Retartha introduced himself. He is with Notre Dame's Student Affairs. Classes are done November 20th and pick up again January 13th. The Landing is the area north of Douglas Road that is reserved for married and parenting students, and that will be going online in August 2020. Promotional materials for that will be moving on that just after the new year. INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND UPDATES/CONCERNS: Ken Baierl introduced himself. He is the Chief of Staff to the Chancellor of IU South Bend. He is also the Director of Communications and Marketing. Roger Pinto introduced himself. He is the President of the Student Body of IU South Bend. Thursday, November 21st there will be a benefit dinner in support of the Student Emergency pP g Y Relief Fund. That was started at IU South Bend that originally focused on the student veteran population. It was a result of some issues with GI disbursements. When the Federal Government shuts down or they institute a new GI bill, there are some implementation problems. There were many student veterans on campus that had financial needs such as paying their rent or mortgages due to this delay. It is a non-academic scholarship. We have also identified quite a few other students that are not student veterans on campus that also struggle with meeting their financial 2 needs. That fund is up and running and they are looking at replicating that fund throughout the entire IU system. INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE UPDATES/CONCERNS: Gail Mancini introduced herself. She announced she had three (3) things she wanted to mention. On Friday, November 22nd at Chicory Café there is a Trivia Night in support of St. Margret's House. That is hosted by our American Medical Women Association. There is a Bike Barn that opened in the Near Northwest Neighborhood. That is the first (1St) product of a summer program that began a year ago called the Summer Community Health Innovation. It is run by the husband of one (1) of the medical students and it is literally a place you can go in and get a bike if you need a bike. Also, if you have a bike and want to donate them, you can. The idea is that it will promote a deal of health if people start riding around. More and more students are living by the campus and more and more faculty seem to be living in the Harter Heights neighborhood. There have been more and more concerns about safety and the Administration of the School of Medicine is inquiring about another active shooter training drill. That used to be coopted with Notre Dame. RESIDENTS/NEIGHBORS UPDATES/CONCERNS: Pam Claeys introduced herself. She represented the River Park Neighborhood Association. They are the immediate neighbor to IUSB. They are going on nine (9) years of successful communication with the University. IU is redoing the landscaping in the spring and they are looking forward to that. There are continued parking problems of students parking in residential areas. CITY OF SOUTH BEND UPDATES/CONCERNS: Captain Jason Biggs introduced himself. He is the Commander of the Detective Bureau of the South Bend Police Department which oversees all of our special investigations, metro homicide, special victims unit, ATF and for now the drug investigation. He filled in for Chief Tim Lancaster as he was in a meeting and couldn't get away from it. Geovanny Martinez introduced himself. He is an Assistant City Attorney for the City of South Bend and he is responsible for aiding the South Bend Police Department. He was there on behalf of Stephanie Steele, Corporation Counsel, and had nothing to report. Councilmember Gavin Ferlic introduced himself. He mentioned some folks had expressed the need for a stop sign at the Notre Dame and South Bend Avenue intersection. Public Works mentioned that should be addressed by February. Councilmember Gavin Ferlic adjourned the meeting at 3:48 p.m. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for January 28th, 2019 at 3:30 p.m. Respectfiill Submitted, Gavin Ferlic, Committee Chair 3
