AN ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, APPROPRIATING MONIES
WITHIN THE ZOO ENDOWMENT FUND TO BE USED
FOR CAPITAL PROJECTS AND/OR IMPROVEMENTS AT
THE POTAWATOMI ZOO, CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
FOR THE YEAR 1995
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND INTENT
The Common Council of the City of South Bend has determined
it to be in the best interest of the City of South Bend and to be
in the best interest of the City' s Park Department to authorize
and appropriate monies dispersed from the Dorothy Shanafelt
Douglas Trust and deposited into the Zoo Endowment Fund to be
used for capital improvements to the Potawatomi Park Zoo only,
according to the restrictions of the Dorothy Shanafelt Douglas
Trust . The Dorothy Shanafelt Douglas Trust provided a cash
distribution for 1995 totaling approximately $10, 105 . 69 .
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, AS FOLLOWS :
Section I . The Dorothy Shanafelt Douglas Trust monies
deposited into the Zoo Endowment Fund, and totaling $10, 105 . 69,
shall be and hereby are appropriated and set apart for the
capital projects specified herein below and according to the
restrictions of the Trust .
Capital Improvements utilizing funds from the Dorothy Shanafelt
Douglas Trust include construction of a greenhouse at Potowatomi
Zoo to maintain a supply of replacement plants and as an area for
the propagation of plant cuttings for animal exhibits at the Zoo.
The greenhouse would also be used to house cold sensitive plants
during the winter months. The following specific activities in
connection with the construction of a greenhouse at the Zoo are
to be funded by the Dorothy Shanafelt Douglas Trust funds :
1 . Trench in the gas service, electrical service, water
line and frost free hydrant .
2 . Trench in the 60 ft . x 30 ft . concrete footings . (21/2
yards concrete)
3 . Build 4 ft . high block walls and door frames .
4 . Erect greenhouse metal frame sides and roof.
5 . Frame end walls with doorway.
6 . Sheath roof and side walls with fiberglass sheets .
7 . Install fluorescent reflector fixtures.
8 . Install overhead gas furnace.
9 . Build plant tables .
Section II . This ordinance shall be in full force and
effect from and after its passage and approval by the Mayor.
