HomeMy WebLinkAboutDocument 12818 The History of New Carlisle's Funeral Home... _ In 1925,Homer Amen and his wife Maleta _ purchased the Brummitt Home at 201 South " = Filbert Street in New Carlisle to be converted M into the H.C.Amen Funeral Home.Upon the establishment of the funeral home,Mrs.Amen was granted a dual license by the State of Indiana to serve as a partner and funeral director with her husband. ix _ _ ' II In 1950,theirsori Robert joined the firm which was later renamed H.C.Amen and Son Funeral Home.Shortly after this time,Homer retired but continued to assist his son when needed until his death in 1970.Robert owned and managed the firm until his retirement in January 1986.At that time,it was the oldest continuous business in New Carlisle. Upon Robert's retirement,the Amen family sold the funeral home to the Kaniewski family,owners of Kaniewski Funeral Home in South Bend.The firm was then renamed the Amen-Kaniewski Funeral Home. Kenneth and Robert Kaniewski,brothers,are the third generation owners of Kaniewski Funeral Homes.They presently,manage both the South Bend and New Carlisle locations.Five of Kenneth and Robert's children have joined the family business,making it the fourth generation of service to the communities.
