Front Street was a wedding gift to Mary Zuielda Reynolds and Anthony N. Van Ryper upon the celebration of their marriage on May 4, 1880, from her father, James Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds bought the house and property from Dr. Joel Haris, who had owned it for 17 years. There probably was another house at this site which was torn down to build the Van Ryper's house. Dr. Van Ryper was originally from New York and obtained his medical education from the University of Michigan. Mrs. Van Ryper was four years old when her father came to St. Joseph County and settled in Hamilton in Olive Township. Mr. Reynolds was very wealthy and a prominent landowner and was said to be the wealthiest man in St. Joseph County. The Van Rypers only lived in the house for five years but many influencial people of New Carlisle have lived or owned it since its construction including: Haven and Lucius Hubbard from 1897-1912, Albert W. Fack from 1916-1921 and finally Ada Bernice and Marion Tuttle who bought it in 1968 and have owned it since then. This is one of the best examples of the Italianate style in New Carlisle, this house retains its original architectural features. Legal Description: Lot 71 O. P. New Carlisle 20. Mr. Hubbard purchased the property that year from Alanson Pidqe. It was part of land originally owned by J. H. Service. This house is significant for its 3 story tower, hooded windows and elaborately detailed porch. Ransom Hubbard was born in 1816 in Oneida County. New York. Mr. Hubbard came west in 1836 and settled in Olive Township. Hubbard was a successful farmer (he owned 700 acres of land) and was elected County Commissioner 3 times. The land had various owners. Mark Brummitt purchased it in 1921 Mary Ellen Hooten in 1928, William 8 Ethylen Driscoll in 1946. The present owners are Glen & Florence Watson. They bought the residence in 1951 . Wide frieze board under wide overhang gives depth to tracery in the gables. The corner porch on Cherry Street has 1 square column and 2 pilasters with fleur-de-lis capitals supporting decorative frieze of brackets, half arches and more fleur-de-lis. Entrance made of tall paired oak doors with beveled glass panels and brass door knobs. Wrought iron corn stalk fence above porch and bay windows. Brackets also support the gable eaves at the corners. Belvedere or tower on the north east corner is 3 stories high. The first 2 floors have closed shutter windows. A frieze of wooden brackets separate the 2nd and 3rd floor. Third floor is made of clapboard siding with double hung windows with segmented arches and and triangular pediment. Brackets support the mansard copper roof, and widows walk. Runnels around 1870. It is noted for its simple brick construction with cut stone lintels and sills. It is symmetrical in plan with the main 2-story body of the house being flanked by single story wings on the east & west: Louis' & Max Hamburger purchased the property at a Sheriff's sale held in 1879 for $108.07. The Hamburgers sold the property that same year to Charles Uhl who lived there until 1874. It was purchased by Ransom Hubbard in 1884 who lived across the street at 202 W. Front Street. The Hubbards owned the home until 1909 when Mary Hubbard, then widowed sold it to Francis D. Warner. The home was acquired by Zethia Loomis in 1918. She resided at 203 W. Front Street until 1926 when she sold the property to George & Mary Stockton. He purchased the property to 1884 from H.V. & Albert Compton. He resided here until 1899 when he sold it to Mary White. It remained in the White family until 1940 when Nora Wenger purchased the property. The present owners are Paul and Lillian Runnels. The house has a cross-shape plan with 2 small front porches with slender spindle columns. A bay window projects from the middle front of the house. Windows are 2/2 double hunq wood sash windows. Anthony Herzog was born in Germany in 1841 where he trained to be a tailor. At the age of 24 he came to America and directly to Mishawaka where he began his trade. He moved several times to the east and finally returned to New Carlisle in 1870. In 1876 he married Rosa Santmeier and built a house on West Chestnut Street three years later. Mrs. Santmeier died in 1885 and the house which was in her name was put to auction at a sheriff' s sale in 1889, when Royal Fisk over bought it. The house changed hands several times/and had various owners including: The Kamm & Schellinger Brewinq Company, Charles & Barbara McCann, Harry & Auqusta Bennett, Rayon & Lillian Beall , Walter & Nora Beall Wenger. It has several later additions and alterations including the front porch which has slender tuscan columns and a dentilled frieze which was added around 1900. Behind the house is a barn which was the original New Carlisle Fire House. David Hay was a native of Ohjn who moved to St . Joseph County in 1864. His son John was born in Ppansylv�r,�a in 1839. In New Carlisle John Hay engaged in the mercantile business and in 1878 was elected Treasurer of St. Joseph County. In 1879 John Hay sold the Droperty to Carrie M. Harris_ In 1910� thA property came into the possession of the Aaron Wenner family. It was built in 1912 for Edward L. Maudlin. _ Its architect is unknown, however, it is similar to Prairie stvle houses desi4ned _ by Ernest Young and Austin & Shambleau in South Bend. _ Mr. Maudlin purchased the property in 1910 from Samuel Darrow. There may have _ been an older house on the site which this one replaced. Maudlin lived here until _ 1919, when he sold it to Harry and Bertha Davison. The Davison's sold it to Charles White in 1921 , who lived here until 1956.
