NEW CARLISLE — The,
Town Council last week post?.
poned a decision on whether
to support a grant proposal,
for streetscape improve=
ments. The proposal will be,
considered at a special meet-::
mg Tuesday.
Council Vice President
Charlotte Smith told repre-
sentatives of Historic New:
Carlisle Inc., the group spon-
soring the streetscape`,
project, that the council;
needed more time to study
the request and that Council
President .David Swope;
needed to be present. !
Swope could not attend last,
Tuesday's meeting because;
of a recent illness.
Kim Dadlow, president or
Historic New Carlisle, pre-
sented the proposal for the:
$156,000 project,which would:
be partly funded by a grant;
from the Indiana Department,
of Transportation. Dadlow:
said the local share would be:
20 percent of the total cost,or:
$31,200, while InDOT would.
contribute 80 percent, or:
$124,800.
The beautification project:
consists of replacing existing;
street lights between Arch.
and Bray streets with 45 an-
tique-style lights, planting:
four dwarf trees, and install-;
ing tree grates, benches and;
waste receptacles.
Dadlow said the historic:
society plans to raise its:
share of the local cost
through donations and fund
raisers.
"We have received support.
for the grant from the com-.
munity businesses," Dadlow
said.
The historic streetscape;
would complement the his-
toric architecture of the town;
Dadlow added.
Dadlow reminded the
council that the town faces
an April 14 deadline for send-
ing the proposal to the Michi-
ana Area Council of Govern-
ments, which will forward it
to InDOT for review.
