Agenda: Update: NRC & Economic Engagement Collaboration
Committee Chair Karen White called to order the Residential Neighborhoods Committee meeting
at 4:35 p.m. She introduced members of the Committee and proceeded to give the floor to the
presenters.
Update: NRC & Economic Engagement Collaboration
Alkeyna Aldridge, Director of Engagement and Economic Empowerment with offices located on
the 14th floor of the County-City Building, stated, As Councilmember White shared, we will be
doing a full update in July where we will be joined by the NRC and their new Executive Director.
I look forward to the opportunity of you all to meet with her. What you have in front of you
(available in the City Clerk's Office)just touches on a few key things so that you can frame any
questions you might have for July. You can share those with me by email so that when the update
happens,we can speak directly to those, as well. Essentially,the charge we have from this Council
and the Executive Director is to work with the NRC as partners to scale up meaningful engagement
in our neighborhoods as well as making sure that the eighty-seven percent(87%)of folks who are
not represented by a civic organization find an opportunity and space to engage with the NRC by
way of the NRC and all of our bureaucrats here. We will soon be launching more of a fundraising
effort around this. So, side note, if you know anyone who has an interest in neighborhood
revitalization, please get them in contact with me. Please go ahead and mark your dates for this.
This will be fun.
She continued, Another thing that is really exciting in the way of fundraising with the NRC is we
won a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation to host a youth Council. So, the Mayor's

Youth Task Force is going away but we need to find another way to continuously engage youth
with the City and also, I think, find more meaningful ways to connect the NRC, sustainably, with
Council. We know people like to spend money on youth, so we think it's a good opportunity for
them to keep fundraising into the future. One (1) thing, and it came from me mulling through our
Code, in 2003, the Council codified a Youth Council. So, I have, essentially, a project plan and it
is two (2) pages (which is available in the City Clerks' Office). It is a timeline of how we will go
ahead and execute this. The NRC has applied for Community Foundation Funds in the past and
what they noted was that this was a strong application because of the amount of partnerships. That
is something that we want to continue with the NRC. You guys are a key part of executing this.
Our team brings some additional capacity to make sure this thing happens. I wanted to make sure
you had this and I'm looking forward to our meeting in July. Nothing here is set in stone and it is
all debatable. We will have to work with Bob to rephrase the ordinance. We haven't even decided
on a name and that is something I think this body should choose as it is your ordinance to begin
with.
Committee Chair White stated, I would like to add to that. In 2003, we did initiate the Youth
Council. For a number of years, we were very much involved. A number of individuals you now
see in this community, they were a part of that Youth Council including Mrs. Murphy who is now
back in the community working with one(1)of the local TV stations. There are a number of those
individuals that were a part of that and that stayed in the community and are now giving back. We
need to look at that ordinance and you will get a copy of that and we ask for feedback to make sure
it is reflective of what we think needs to happen.
Ms. Aldridge stated, I will follow up with electronic copies but the last thing you have are the
changes from the original NRC programming. What we've done is scaled that up to have
something more outcomes-based.
Councilmember John Voorde interjected, I think we ought to have a Senior Council.
Ms.Aldridge replied,Yeah,that would be cool. I also liked your idea about innovation and I would
like to be a part of any of those conversations to increase our engagement with our Boards and
Commissions. Thank you.
Committee Chair White then opened the floor to questions and comments from Committee and
Council Members. There were none. She then opened the floor to members of the public wishing
to speak. There were none.
With no further business, Committee Chair White adjourned the Residential Neighborhoods
Committee meeting at 4:43 p.m.
