MAYORPETE BUTTIGIEG ASKS RESIDENTS TO SLOW DOWN
FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN
SOUTH BEND Mayor Pete Buttigieg is asking South Bend residents to be more
mindful of traffic rules in school zones as students return to the classroom. School starts
for the South Bend Community School Corporation on Wednesday,August 22.
School zones with flashing traffic control devices will be enabled, and the South Bend
Police Department, along with the Street Department, will utilize lighted sign boards to
remind drivers that school is back in session. The Street Department is currently making
sure the city's flashing yellow lights are in working order.
The South Bend Police Department will have extra officers out patrolling school zones to
ensure motorists observe the speed limit and other traffic signals, especially when children
and buses are present.
Police will be increasing enforcement in school zones with heavy emphasis on the first
week of school. The department's goal is to correct drivers' behavior, ensuring zero
accidents involving children and pedestrians near schools. Included with speed zone
checks will be increased enforcement of"NO Turn On Red" intersection violations.
Parents of kids that walk to and from school are urged to reinforce good safety practices
while walking near traffic. School zone speeds in South Bend are 25 miles per hour.
