Purpose
The purpose of this study is to determine whether any
traffic control improvements are warranted at the
intersection of Sheridan Street and Brentwood Drive. The
Engineering Division has received a request from a
resident to replace the existing yield signs on Brentwood
Drive with stop signs. This memo summarizes the warrant
analysis conducted to assess the need for a permanent
two-way stop at this intersection and the proposed
recommendation.
LoicationlDescri tion
In this location, both Sheridan Street and Brentwood Drive are classified as local streets
and each have one travel lane per direction. This area is a primarily residential area.
Warrants
The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices sets forth the following requirements to
warrant the installation of two-way stop control:
The following criteria should be considered in the engineering study for a two-way STOP sign
installation:
A. The intersection of a less important road with a main road where the applications of the normal
right-of-way rule is hazardous;
B. A street entering through a highway or street;
C. An unsignalized intersection in a signalized area;
D. Other intersections where a combination of high speed, restricted view, and serious accident
record indicates a need for control by the stop sign.
Existing Traffic Control
This intersection is currently two-way yield controlled, Brentwood Drive yields and
Sheridan Street is the through street. The intersection of Sheridan Street and Ardmore
Trail, 800 feet to the south, is a signalized intersection. A four-way stop condition exists
at the intersection of Sheridan Street and St. Johns Way, which is 1200 feet to the
north.

Collision Data
Four years of collision records were accessed in the Aries portal (April 2015-April 2019)
for the intersection of Sheridan Street and Brentwood Drive. Only one incident was
reported during this timeframe. This incident was due to the driver being distracted,
looking away from the road, and not noticing that the vehicle in front of him stopped at
the intersection. This was a rear end crash. The crash reported indicated that at the
time of the crash, Brentwood Drive was stop -controlled.
Recommendation
Considering that the intersection formerly had stop control on Brentwood Drive, it is the
recommendation of the Engineering Division to replace existing yield signs on
Brentwood with stop signs.
