Vision: We desire to see the next generation of South Bend youth better equipped, trained and mentored to be great employees and positive members of our community. Experience: Greater Impact Lawn Care was started in 2014 to teach the youth of ISI how to work through meaningful employment. GILC offices are located at 1519 Portage Avenue, South Bend, IN 46616. In 2014, GILC had 4 properties to mow. They have since grown to over 225 properties and more than 50 accounts. Significant past customers include South Bend Parks Department, South Bend Urban Enterprise Association, Near Northwest Neighborhood Inc., St. Joseph Juvenile Justice Center, Excel Center, Transformation Center and Beacon Community Center. GILC does between $55,000-$60,000 in sales each year. GILC has 4 Objectives: 1. JOBS - It's our intention to provide jobs for urban youth living in the Michiana area. 2. SKILLS - We intend to teach youth life skills through work (Time management, positive attitude, work ethic, financial literacy, workplace behaviors, effective communication, positive self-image, GRIT.) 3. TRAIN - Our goal is to train up the next generation of youth in South Bend to work hard and be great employees for future companies. 4. QUALITY - We provide quality work and excellent customer service. We stand behind all that we do. Every student who applies to work for Greater Impact Lawn Care is part of an intense, year -long leadership program called Iron Sharpens Iron (ISI). Students apply to be a part of ISI and are interviewed along with their parents before accepted into the program. We currently have 72 under-resourced youth in the South Bend community who are a part of ISI. ISI staff are looking for students who are: 1. Responsible for themself and committed to the team. 2. Respectful to their leaders, peers and others. 3. Ready to better themselves and their future. There are 4 main components of ISI: 1. Spiritual Growth - Each student is allowed to explore their faith and free to respond accordingly. (We do not accept or reject students based on their faith background). 2. Academic Empowerment - Each student is helped academically through after school tutoring, mentors tracking student progress, and college readiness programs. 3. Life Skills - Each student goes through an 8 week life skills training. Greater Impact Lawn Care was birthed out of a desire to teach the youth life skills through meaningful employment. 4. Mentoring - Each student is paired with a mentor that is compatible with their personality and common interests. Volume and Employees: Our business has grown each year. In 2018, we had over 225 properties we serviced as well as numerous one-time landscaping projects and small general construction jobs. This year we plan to have over 300 properties as well as 15 employees. Insurance and Bonding: See attached insurance certificate. On-the-job mentoring - Our supervisors are highly trained to act as mentor coaches by focusing on 4 main areas: a. Attitude - Remain positive and don't complain. b. Effort/Work Ethic - Work hard and be proactive in staying on task. c. Quality- Provide quality work as a result of focus and attention to detail. d. Timeliness - show up on time to work and work in a timely manner on-the-job. We talk about these 4 areas during every shift as we desire to keep things simple for the students while also recognizing that these 4 objectives are crucial to the students becoming positive future employees in our community some day. Student Testimonial: "Greater Impact has provided me with my first job. It has taught me how to work hard and always have a great attitude. Students will learn soft skills applicable to their job and everyday life. 2. Students will be able to identify the following about soft skills: what they are, why they are important and when to be used. 3. Students will implement the skills into their specified job. 4. They are each given the safety handout below and are required to follow all the procedures. GI Safety Procedures 1. Use protective eyewear and earplugs at all times while mowing. 2. Wear GI shirts, long pants, and close toed shoes at all times while mowing. 3. Walk the lot and look for rocks, trash, branches, etc before mowing. 4. Do not put gasoline or oil in machinery unless accompanied by a supervisor. 5. Keep hands, feet and face away from blade of mower at all times. 6. Do not operate any machinery unless you have been properly trained by a supervisor. 7. Operate mowers at a speed that is moderate and comfortable. Work efficiently, but don't go as fast as the mower goes just to get done as fast as you can! 8. Be extremely careful when operating machinery on hills. Always try to go perpendicular (up and down the hill -- not side to side) when operating on STEEP hills rather than horizontally. 9. Be extra cautious when operating machinery around cars, close to houses, and people as objects can shoot out at any time and damage property or be extremely harmful to people. Stop (disengage the blade) when you are mowing close to a road/sidewalk and cars/people are approaching. 10. Make sure the blades are disengaged when you are not in proper mowing position. 11. Do not continue to operate machinery if mower is smoking or making abnormal sounds. 12. Report any and all injuries to supervisor immediately. *Employees will be able to operate equipment, thus work more hours based on how he/she follows the safety procedures below.
