John,
Glad I was able to touch base with you regarding your fence project at 735 E Bronson,
which is in our Edgewater Local Historic District. Exterior improvements on locally
designated properties must adhere to the applicable Standards and Guidelines, which are
available online on the City of South Bend’s website. There are two kinds of review for
those projects: ‘Administrative Approvals’ that myself or my coworker Elicia can process, or
projects that must be reviewed by the nine-member Historic Preservation Commission at
their regularly scheduled monthly meeting. Projects that are approved receive a
“Certificate of Appropriateness” from our office. The Building Department does not issue
any Building Permits for designated properties until a Certificate of Appropriateness has
been generated.
From the description of the fence project, I believe your project will qualify for an
Administrative Approval. Attached to this e-mail is the “Certificate of Appropriateness”
application. For fence projects, I need the following information:
1. Site Plan (Hand drawn is fine – show where the fence is/was)
2. Materials (wood?)
3. Style (Dog eared?)
4. Photos (showing the fence before, and fence now)
Please enter/attach that information to the application. And send it back to me.
The $20 payment can be made by contacting Business Licensing Administrator Michelle
Adams at (574) 235-5912.
I have CC’d Historic Preservation Administrator Elicia Feasel on this exchange, as either she
or I may process this application when we receive it. If you have any questions, please
don’t hesitate to reach out to either of us.
