Unfortunately, the two crack sealing machines currently owned by the city are unrepairable for any kind of reasonable money. In researching rentals, we found two options: BitMat Products will rent us a crack sealing machine for $5,000.00 per month. We would be responsible for all maintenance on the machine as well as the cost of the emulsion used. Also, the emulsion is stored at BitMat Products and when the storage tank is empty, the crew will need to go back to BitMat to fill it back up. The guys estimated that from anywhere in the city, it would be an hour -and -a -half or better trip. That also precludes any night shift patching as BitMat is not open at night to allow for emulsion refills. SealMaster has a different program. The machine that they have uses solid blocks that are heated to a liquid consistency. If we purchase the material from them, they will provide the machine free of charge. The material is $2,400.00 per skid and we figured that a skid would do approximately 36,000 feet, based on a 3/8" crack. The beauty of the solid blocks is that they can be carried on the tow vehicle and melted down in the field, thereby negating the need to run back to the shop or anywhere else. Also, with this program, if we aren't going to use the machine for a week or so, they will come pick it up and credit us for any material left in the hopper and then bring us a new one when we're ready. There is also 24-hour maintenance/repair service. We need to get started on this program as soon as possible and appreciate any help you can give in getting the necessary approvals so that we can move forward. Thank you.
