AN ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY Or SOUTH BEND,
INDIANA, APPROPRIATING $374,361 WITHIN THE EMERGENCY MEllICAL
SERVICES CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND (#288) TO PURCHASE NECCSSARY
FIRE EQUIPMENT
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND INTENT
The City of South Bend Fire Department wishes to purchase 78 self-contained breathing
apparatus units which are also certified to be used in a chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear
incident. The appropriation of these monies will help enable the South Bend Fire Department to
utilize a federal grant to purchase this equipment, thus allowing the Fire Department to fight fire and
to deal with other disasters more effectively and to benefit and best protect the public.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH BEND AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the following sum of money is hereby appropriated within the Emergency
Medical Services Capital Improvement Fund (#288) for the purchase of new equipment:

Section 2. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage by the
Common Council and approval by the Mayor.

Please find attached for filing an Ordinance registering an Appropriation for
$374,361.00 within the EMCIF (Fund 288). The Appropriation will allow the Fire
Department to purchase seventy eight (78) Self Contained Breathing Apparatus
/CBRN. During 2004 the Department received a Federal Grant for $374,361.00
to purchase the SCBA's. We will receive 70% of the total grant totaling
$262,053.00, with our matching share of 30% for $112,308.00.
The Grant will allow the Department the ability to provide our Firefighters with
the state of the art SCBA's, and in the event of a chemical, biological,
radiological and nuclear incident the SCBA's will provide protection to our
firefighters.
Chief Luther Taylor will be the presenter of this Ordinance.
