4 Board met in regul,ai session at 14:00 A.M. All members present.
Mayor F. R. Carson present,.
Mr. 1. Staples of Staples & Ackerman met with the Board and re.
quested an extension of time on the Portage Avenue pipe sewer improvement
from A116yrn,orth. ofLginyon Street to- Steker Place until June lst.,1918. The Board
grafi.ea said Staples & Ackerman untilMay lst.101918 in which to complete said
improvement,
Mr. T. F. Grover, Vice Pres. & Gen'I. Mgr. of the Chicago, South
Bend & Northern Indian*& Railway Company, with Attorney H. A. Wain attorney for
said: Company appeared before the Board and requested that the Board consider
modifying said Jefferson Blvd. improvement resolution for paving , to read from
Ea,st.line of Michigan Street to east line of Lincoln Way East, eliminating jihat
portion of pavement from Lincoln Way East to west line of Bridge over the St.
Joseph River. The Board informed Mr. Grover and Atty. Wair that they would take
this m9tter under advisement and let them know their decision later.
J Geo. M. Urey, Sexton City Vemetery met with the Board .end explained -
about outstand ing accounts in the Cemetery-,department.

This being the date set for rece iv ing of bids for the lumber supply
for the Street Repair department for the season 19189 bids were received and the °
award in& of the contract held up .until Tuesday March 19trh. ,1918 at 10: 00 A.M.
Petition for a pipe sewer on St. Vicent Street from Eddy Street to
Notre Dame Avenue received, read and referred to the City Engineer for report on
same.
Petition received from• property owners Pn Harvey Street between
Allen Street and Blaine Avenue, requesting pavement on said street. Same read and
resolution ordered,
✓a Petition received from property owners on Blaine Avenue from Lincoln-
Wa$ West to Vassar Avenue, requesting pavement on said street, same read and
resolution/ordered prepared. Referred to -the City Engineer for same.

It was unanimpusly,approved by the Board , that William Cordier
be permitted to take possession Of ;house owned by City at 224 No. Main Street
with the right of the Board -of Public Works -to move any City Department in house
at anytime. -William Cord ier ' to ' pay no rent, , but to pay for all heating, 1 ight ing
etc:, To occupy the house until further order of the Board of Public -Works as ,
Caretaker. 'To furnish heat, light and water for 'two rooms for the Visiting Nurse
Association, now located in the Park Board off ice. Wdl.l iam Cord ier to have the
plumber make necessary repairs on .plumbing work in house at 224 No. Main Street,

The Board instructed cl irk to hold up all street lighting bills until June.
The following resolution tvas approved by the Board and bids advertised
SIDEWALK IMPROVEIIENT RESOLUTION -No. 570.
RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, St.
JosetiC ounty, State of Indiana, That it is deemed necessary to improve Various Streets
in the City of South Bend, Indiana.
That an improvement be made of the kind, size, location and terminal
pointy as follows,
That bids be received for the c onsstruct ion and. rep air ing of cement
sidewalks, curbs and for filling and excavating for said sidewalks, orbs and for
filling and excavating for .said sidewalks and curbs, on different streets in said City,
inhere the same have already been partly constructed, or are.dfectively constructed. All such,
work to be done after the owners of - abutting property have been ordered and notified to
construct or repair such sidewalks and curbs for a period of 30 days from the date of any
such notice. All wakk to be constructed or repaired in accordance with standard speci-
fications on file the Off ice of the City Engineer df said City. All work to be done and
assessments matte as provided in Section 1 of an Act Intitled " An Act Concerning Municipal
c ofarat ions approved 1909, at pages 412 to 413.
The cost of said improvement, including the codt of -street and alley
intersections, shall be assessed upon the real estate abutting on said Various Streets,
all according to the method and manner provided for in an Act of the Heneral. Assembly of the
State of Indiana, entitled w An Act Concerning Municipal Corporations,. " approved March 6,
1905, and in accordance with and pursuant to the provisions of -all amendatory and supple-
mental thereto, passed by the General Assembly of tha State of Indiana. Assessments, if
deferred, are to be paid in ten equal annual installments, with interest at the rate of
Six per cent per annum.. A bond or bonds shall be issued to the contractor in payment for
such work, unless the property owners pay said assessment before said bond or bonds are
issued. Under no circumstances shall the City of South Bend, be, or be held responsible
for any sum or sums due from said property owner or owners for said work or for the collection
of the same, or for the payment of any bond, bonds, certificate or certificates, issued to
said contractor in payment for such work, except for such moneys as shell have been actually
received by the City Vrom. the assessment _for such for such improvement, or such moneys
as shall hsve been actually received by the City from the assessments for such improvement,
or such moneys as said City is by said above entitled Act required -to pay. All proceedngs
had, and work done in the making of said improvement, assessment of property, collection of
assessments and issuance of bonds therefor, shall be as arovided for in said above entitled
Act and amendment thereto.
Notice of bids shall be published on the 15th. day Mareh1918 And on
the 22nd.day of Itarch 1918 in the South Bend Daily Tribune. This Board will
on this res glut ion in its office in the City Hall on the 2nd. day of April 1918 at 10: 00 A.M.
