MAYOR BUTTIGIEG TO OPEN DOWNTOWN POLICE
STOREFRONT OFFICE
SOUTH BEND Mayor Pete Buttigieg, along with South Bend Police Chief Chuck
Hurley, will participate in the grand opening of the new downtown South Bend Police
Department storefront office on Thursday. The storefront or"sub-station"will allow
officers and volunteers to promote safety with businesses and residents and participate in
downtown events.
The opening will take place on Thursday, June 28 at 12:00 p.m. The sub-station is located
at 119 S. Michigan Street.
"The sub-station will be open to all South Bend residents to learn more about crime
prevention and being safe," said Mayor Buttigieg. "Residents and business owners can
also find information about events happening around the city, especially downtown. It
will bring more police presence to the downtown area and promote increased safety
through events, tutorials, partnerships with DTSB, and the sharing of information."
The new sub-station will offer crime prevention and visitors' bureau literature, finger
printing and identification for children, and job recruitment information. The sub-station
will be staffed by volunteers in police services. The sub-station will primarily serve as a
base for officers who will be working throughout downtown. It will be open when major
events occur downtown or when the department is hosting an event on public safety for
business operators, residents, or visitors to South Bend. The office will not be open 24
hours a day.
"The sub-station will be utilized by officers who are assigned into the downtown area by
foot patrol, bicycles, and T-3s," said Chief Chuck Hurley. "The officers will have access
to the computer system where crime reports can be input onsite where officers will not
have to return to the main station for reporting."
