2018 Annual Report of the Health and Public Safety Committee
Dear Common Councilmembers:
As Chairperson of the Health and Public Safety Committee, I am filing this report pursuant to §
2-10(i) of the South Bend Municipal Code. It highlights some of the Committee's activities
involving zoning and special exception requests affecting the land use decisions in the City of
South Bend.
Duties: As noted in the South Bend Municipal Code, the Health and Public Safety
Committee is charge with the following duties:
Oversees the various activities performed by the Fire and Police Departments, EMS,
Department of Code Enforcement, ordinance violations, and related health and public safety
matters.
Members: There were four(4) Council Members and two (2) Citizen Members this year
serving on the Committee namely:
1. Councilmember Jo M. Broden, Chairperson
2. Councilmember John Voorde, Vice-Chairperson
3. Councilmember Oliver Davis, Member
4. Councilmember Karen L. White, Member
5. Genevieve Crum, Citizen Member
6. Susan Soisson, Citizen Member
Meetings: The Health and Public Safety Committee met a total of eight(8)times in
2018, with an organizational meeting in March to look at past issues, to determine issues
of ongoing interest, and to identify any new issues. The following is a brief summary of
