RE: Request for Traffic Control Device — Handicapped Accessible Parking Space Sign
Dear Ms. Allen:
The Board of Public Works, at its meeting held on January 8, 2019, denied your request for
the installation of a handicapped accessible parking space sign at 2503 Flint Court, as it does
not meet the requirements.
The Ordinance for handicapped parking space sign is written for 1) a handicapped vehicle
associated with a driver who has medical proof of handicap recognized by the Bureau of
Motor Vehicles and who resides at a residence where the space is being reserved and 2) that
does not have a driveway that offers ease of handicapped access. After review of your
application and the area in front of your home, it was determined that there is a driveway that
will provide better access.

On November 8, 2018, the City of South Bend received a handicap parking request from Ms.
Deanne Allen at 2503 Flint Court, South Bend, IN. In 2016, the City removed all non -compliant
handicap parking signs adjacent to Portageway Drive and installed two handicap parking signs
on the north and south side of the street. Additionally, the apartment complex (Indian Springs)
was informed about ADA requirements for private property parking. The resident requested a
handicap parking sign on Portageway Drive (City Owned), which is in front of the resident's
building complex. The Division of Engineer recommends denying the handicap parking request.
