HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-02-18 CCAC © © © ____________________________________________________________________ The October 2nd, 2018 Community/Campus Advisory Coalition (CCAC) meeting was called to order by Committee Chair Gavin Ferlic at 3:32 p.m. in the Council Informal Meeting Room in the County City Building at 227 W. Jefferson Blvd, South Bend IN. At this event students can receive information from landlords and other housing options. The idea is to help students think through the decision of moving off campus and see if it is right for them. The City of South Bend will also have representatives available from the Department of Code Enforcement that will be available for questions as well. The University has found that students are still interested in living in houses in the traditional neighborhoods around campus, but lately a bigger draw has been apartments. More and more when students live in a house off-campus it is associated with a larger organization like a club, sport, or residence hall. With so many apartment options coming on-line near campus, the more average student who is just moving off campus by themselves or with one (1) other friend seems to be gravitating towards those options. This freshman class is the first (1st) that will have to stay on campus through their junior year. The University estimates that will lead to about four hundred (400) less students living off campus in two (2) years’ time. Eddy St. Phase Two (2) is coming along well and the University is proud to announce the expansion of the Robinson Community Center. The Center will be expanded to nearly triple its current size. The University hopes this will lead to even more interaction between the University and the residents. Community/Campus Advisory Coalition (CCAC) 2 ST. MARY’S UPDATES/CONCERNS Starting January 2019, St. Mary’s will be celebrating their one hundred and seventy-fifth (175) anniversary. There will of course be events and celebrations planned throughout 2019 that will be announced soon. SGA is currently trying to organize a weekly mass that will offer food to the students afterwards. Currently there is no direct transportation between ND and St. Mary’s on Sundays, SGA is trying to get the shuttle that runs between the two (2) campuses to operate on Sunday as well. More recycling and compost bins will be added to campus over the next few weeks to increase sustainability. HOLY CROSS COLLEGE UPDATES/CONCERNS: On October 30th, Holy Cross will be putting on Ghosts and Goblins which encourages residents to bring their kids trick or treating in the dorms. A St. Vincent de Paul Society has been formed by students who go once a week and pack lunches for in-need families. In November, Holy Cross students will be delivering food baskets to around one hundred (100) families in the South Bend area. Holy Cross is partnering with St. Mary’s to participate in the South Bend ID Program. The first fifty (50) students from either campus who apply will receive a free South Bend ID. This stemmed from a new initiative at Holy Cross to encourage and support first generation college students. INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND UPDATES/CONCERNS: IUSB has been putting on debates on their campus for the local elections coming up, the most recent being the Sherriff’s debate. SGA has increased their budget by 50% this year with the goal of getting more money out to the clubs to increase student engagement. A campus safety committee has been formed to take a broad look at safety on campus. The committee is looking at things like how well-lit certain parts of campus are at night and other ways to improve safety on campus. TRANSPO now offers free rides to all IUSB students, they gave over 1,300 rides alone in just August. RESIDENTS/NEIGHBORS UPDATES/CONCERNS: No residents gave concerns/updates during this meeting. CITY OF SOUTH BEND UPDATES/CONCERNS: City Clerk Kareemah Fowler and Ordinance Violations Bureau Clerk Joseph Molnar gave an update to the Committee on the Notre Dame Lawn Parking Program. In order for residents to park cars on their lawns for any ND Home Football Game or any other ND Stadium event, the resident must receive from the City Clerk’s Office a permit to do so. Parking cars on the grass is 3 illegal to do so if no permit is received. The permit ensures a safe environment for both residents and visitors to the neighborhoods around ND. Individuals cannot double park cars, must have clear entrances and exits and have limits on the number of cars available to park depending on lot size. The City Clerk’s Office releases an official online interactive parking website before each game that has a map of where all permit holders are located and other information. OVB Clerk Joseph Molnar showed the Committee the map during this time. The map received over 1,500 unique views for just the first (1st) ND football game. The map serves as a benefit to the visitors and extra advertisement for individuals who do the right thing and get the permit. The Clerk’s Office is planning to continue the map for all special events, not just football games, which would include the Garth Brooks Concert. Tim Sexton stated this is a wonderful program and the map is a great tool for the University. He asked if St. Joseph County has anything similar for their lawn parkers and noted they usually have more issue with County lots north of Campus. He also asked if Holy Cross and St. Mary’s parking options could be added to the website. Ms. Fowler responded that as far as she knew, St. Joseph County does not have any specific legislation regarding lawn parking and they have no restrictions/requirements. The Clerk’s Office will also look at adding more parking options on the website such as Holy Cross and St. Mary’s. Our primary goal is to make parking easier for visitors. The next meeting will be tentatively scheduled for December 4th at 3:30 p.m. With no further business to discuss, Gavin Ferlic adjourned the meeting at 4:12 p.m.
