Scott Ford to Lead Revamped City Department
South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg formally announced today the hire of Scott Ford as
the new director for the City of South Bend's Department of Community and Economic
Development. Mayor Buttigieg spent the afternoon introducing Ford to members of the
South Bend Common Council.
"Scott will be a great leader for the City of South Bend's neighborhood and economic
development staff," said Mayor Buttigieg. "This department is critical to the growth and
quality of life in South Bend and Scott brings the vision, experience,and work ethic to
make an immediate impact."
Ford spent the last 10 years working professionally and studying in Washington,D.C.,
London,Miami,Rome,Pittsburgh,and Los Angeles in architecture and urban design.
Originally from Detroit, Mich.,Ford studied Philosophy,Politics and Economics at the
University of Notre Dame. In 2004,Ford earned an MPhil in urban economics with a
master's thesis on British private sector adherence to new sustainable development policy
in the United Kingdom as a Cambridge Overseas Society Fellow.Ford studied
architecture at the graduate level at the University of Miami and holds a Master of
Architecture degree from Notre Dame. Scott's educational and professional career has
been focused on the life and health of cities and his interests lie at the intersection of
design,planning,policy and development.
"I am pleased to return to South Bend to offer my experience and demonstrate my care
for this city," shared Ford,who is 33 years old.

Ford has worked in design and planning with a number of well-known firms, is a member
of the CNU, and is LEED-AP certified.Ford has been committed to the role of
architecture and urbanism in shaping public space in communities around the country and
world. Ford co-chaired the first student Congress for New Urbanism at Notre Dame and
also worked on a design team to address the redevelopment of the Ninth Ward in post-
Hurricane Katrina New Orleans.
As director,Ford will oversee a staff of 26 people who work on city planning,business
assistance,redevelopment and remediation,property issues,and neighborhood and
community relations.
Since January, Mayor Buttigieg has led a complete review of the department in order to
realign priorities around economic development in the area. A revamped department and
its structure will be announced during an Economic Summit in late June.
