MAYOR BUTTIGIEG TO RECOGNIZE PAY EQUITY DAY FOR WOMEN
South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg will present local members of the American
Association of University Women(AAUW)with a proclamation recognizing their efforts
to promote equal wages in the workplace. On the front steps of the St. Joseph County
Courthouse the mayor will observe April 17 as Pay Equity Day. The event will begin at
12:00 p.m. at 101 South Main Street.
"It is important to recognize Pay Equity Day and reduce the wage gap among women and
men in the workplace," said Buttigieg. "This is a step in the right direction to help raise
awareness of inequality in the workplace."
Pay Equity Day marks the time in the New Year in which the wages paid to American
women catch up to the wages paid to men from the previous year. Participants for Pay
Equity Day includes the staff of the YWCA North Central Indiana, the Women's and
Gender Studies Program at IU South Bend, and other student groups.
"It is important that Hoosiers know that we rank 47th in pay equity in the U.S.," said
April Lidinsky, President of the AAUW South Bend Chapter. "That means that Indiana
women earn 72 cents for every male dollar and the national is 77 cents."
Equal Pay Day was originated by the National Committee on Pay Equity(NCPE) in 1996
as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men's and women's wages.
"We thank Mayor Buttigieg for issuing a proclamation designating April 17 Equal Pay
Day," said Linda Baechle, the President&CEO of YWCA North Central Indiana.
"We are grateful to all those working to raise awareness about the economic impact the
wage gap has on women and their families. Women deserve equal pay for equal work. It
is that simple."
