SOUTH BEND HIRES NEW CITY ENGINEER
South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has announced the hire of Michael Mecham as
incoming City Engineer for the City of South Bend. Michael has fifteen years experience
serving as a city engineer in Washington,Utah,and Oregon.His first day was Monday,
April 2.
"Michael has years of experience and proven leadership to lead the engineering division
of the Department of Public Works," said Buttigieg. "He will bring innovative ideas and
methods to City projects and I would like to welcome him to the City."
Michael started his career in Roosevelt,Utah as a civil engineer for USDA Soil
Conservation Services developing computer models for water distribution, sewer
collection, storm water and floodplain models. Four years later he moved to Oregon
performing similar duties for the city of Salem. As he advanced in his career,Michael
was appointed Assistant Director of Public Works in 1996 for the City of Logan, Utah.
He reviewed and approved over 40 subdivisions and several commercial and industrial
developments.
Later Michael moved to Bremerton,Washington,where he worked as City Engineer and
eventually interim Director of Public Works.During his career Michael developed new
codes and engineering standards to keep the City of Bremerton up to date in the
regulation of public works activities.
Michael graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering.
