MAYOR PETE BUTTIGIEG WELCOMES HOME SOUTH BEND
FIREFIGHTERS AND POLICE DEPLOYED TO HENRYVILLE,IN
South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg thanked the six firefighters from the South Bend Fire
Department and South Bend Police Assistant Chief Gary Horvath who returned home
Friday after an eight-day deployment to the Clark County tornado disaster zone.
"South Bend is proud of the work you have done," said Buttigieg. "Thank you for
dedicating your time and expertise to the recovery efforts for the tornado victims of
southern Indiana."
South Bend crews were a part of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security District 2
All Hazards Incident Management Team. South Bend crews assumed command of the
disaster zone and worked closely with volunteers from across the region to restore the
affected communities. The IDHS District 2 All Hazards Incident Management Team,
which was comprised of fifteen personnel representing seven area counties,was deployed
to the disaster area on March 9, 2012.
Crews utilized their advanced skills to supply emergency support to the tornado victims
residing in the disaster area. The results of their efforts involved the removal of more than
one million cubic yards of debris from the area. More than 60,000 volunteer hours have
been recorded since the onset of the storms.
On March 2, 2012, an EF4 tornado ravaged the southern Indiana communities of New
Pekin,Daisy Hill,Henryville,Mount Moriah,Marysville,and Nabb. The tornado
inflicted widespread damage and claimed the lives of thirteen people. More than five
hundred structures in the area were either partially or completely destroyed by the
tornados. It is estimated that the recovery effort is more than thirty days ahead of initial
estimates due to the hard work of volunteers and response personnel.
