The Departments of Code Enforcement and Solid Waste worked together to coordinate a better cleanup of illegal dumping around the city, culminating last week in the two millionth pound of trash picked up in the city. "I appreciate the hard work by the Code Enforcement and Solid Waste Departments to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the City of South Bend," said Buttigieg. The two departments began cleanup of illegal dumping in late November of 2011. Since that time, city crews cleared more than 2,013,530 pounds of debris from around the city. Their work efforts spanned close to 33 working days that ended January 9. The daily disposal of waste required 4.47 truck loads that accumulated to 13.37 tons of debris. In total, city crews cleared 434.55 tons of debris from city streets, alleyways and abandoned homes. "Neighborhoods and neighbors are experiencing a better quality of life with the removal of 434 tons of debris since the inception of the illegal dumping crew in late November," said Toppel. Code Enforcement plans to continue their efforts thru the remainder of the year with four additional temporary cleanup crews scheduled through June 2012. Their efforts focus on the hardest hit areas of the city between west of downtown, north of Lincoln Way West, south of Lincoln Way West and north of Ewing.
