Works ° ° ' ' ' ' ° ° ° ° ' July 26th.,1920. South Bend, Ind, Gentlemen: - Mr. De Peape contractor for the Dunham Street sewer in making the excavation for the sewer, finds the water main crossing the trench at such a depth that it is not possible to lay the sewer to grade. ° Due to the fact that -the'McPherson Street sewer which forms the outlet for the Dunham Street alewer is so shallow, we cannot lower the sewer grade and go' under the water mein. This makes it necessary that we either siphon under -the main which would be unsatisfactory or that trhe Board order the Water Department tb lower the water main to such an extent that they could go underneath the sewer. The sewer as -designed is only about s i x feet deep and if we raised to go oveV, it would only be a trifle over five feet deep. Yours very truly, FREDERICK J. ANDERSON, City Engineer. This matter referred to the Water Department for Wednesday meeting, at which time Water Department will be ordered to make the change. ROSTISER JOHN F. 77t3 The following communications received, read and placed on file. July 21st.1920 Board of Public Works, South Bend, Indiana. 1 Gentlemen: - I will be out of the city -tonight or would attend t)to,,zeet ing of Your Board with reference to the paving of N. Michigan Street. For your information I am inclosing herewith a letter just received from Mr. Bryan I am -of the opinion that alarge portion of the frontage on this street is dpposed to any expensive pavement at this time. I believe Mr.. Leighton, the street commissioner, could put this street in good condition leveling up the holes and then a top dressing oiled once or twi** a year would keep the dust out. In view of the fact ..that the street car company will not put in a permanent improvement I certainly - ,do not favor building a curb. Yours truly, THOS. W. Dear Mr. Slick: Have just received notice left at my residence by Mr. Thieldns in reference to the Board of Works meeting to be held on next Wednesday on the proposed repaving on North Michigan Street from North Shore Drive, North, and as it will be impossible for me to attend this meeting, wish to advise that under present conditions I am not in favor of repaving this street at the present time at the high prevailing prices. I have talked to some of the'property owners.of,this matter, and I an of the opinion that the majority of the property owners are not in favor of the` repaying at least this year.
