SOUTH BEND FIREFIGHTERS HEAD TO HENRYVILLE,IN TO AID
TORNADO DISASTER RECOVERY
South Bend Six firefighters from the South Bend Fire Department departed for
Hemyville, Indiana this morning to aid in the disaster recovery efforts from the tornado
and storm damage that rocked the town last week.
"South Bend is committed to help in the recovery efforts in Hemyville and we will lend
our services anyway that we can," said Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Assistant Fire Chief James Lopez and firefighter Brian McLaughlin will assist the
Indiana Clark County Tornado Incident Command Post. Captain Chris Baker, Lieutenant
Steve Gervais and firefighters Derek Erquhart and Jim Biernacki will support firefighter
and EMS operations by providing relief to firefighters currently in place.
"It's always good for our Fire Department personnel to go and help a community," said
Lopez. "We know that we're going to do some good."
Volunteer and donation opportunities are available by visiting the official donation site at
the old U.S. Census Bureau warehouse located at 700 Patrol Road, Charlestown, hid.
Donators should follow the receiving signs to Gate 2. The donation management phone
numbers are 812-287-0090 and 812-287-0026. The hours are 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
• Greatest needs are: money, non-perishable food items, paper products, gloves,
heavy duty trash bags, personal hygiene items, baby items, cat food/dog
food/kitty litter, yard tools, gas cards, new packages of socks and underwear,
tarps, laundry baskets and totes, and towels and first aid supplies.
• NOT NEEDED: Perishable/refrigerated/frozen items, Clothing. Household items
and cleaning items will be needed in the near future.
