STREET DEPARTMENT INSTALLS STOP SIGNS AT DANGEROUS
INTERSECTION
Action Follows 12-year-old's personal request to Mayor
South Bend Following a personal action taken by 12-year-old Jordan Stein to alert the
city of a dangerous intersection on the south side of South Bend, Mayor Pete Buttigieg
and the city's Street Department will install stop signs on Friday afternoon to increase
pedestrian safety in the area.
Jordan wrote a letter to Mayor Buttigieg about several accidents occurring near his home
on the corner of Donmoyer Avenue at High Street near Stanley Clark School. At the
mayor's request, City Civil Engineer Robert Nichols took action and reviewed accident
reports at the four-way intersection of Donmoyer. From his research,Nichols discovered
a high number of accident reports at the intersection, which warranted stops signs at the
location.
"I have reviewed the accident reports and also took a site visit to look at the intersection,
said Nichols. "I recommended that stop signs be installed on Donmoyer at High Street to
improve pedestrian crossing safety for the school children that attend Stanley Clark."
Mayor Buttigieg and Jordan will watch as city crews install four new stop signs at the
intersection of Donmoyer at High Street on Friday, January 27 at 1:30 p.m.
"I would like to thank Jordan for bringing the intersection to the city's attention so that
we could install stops signs for improved safety of the residents and children of this
neighborhood," said Buttigieg.
The four-way stop should decrease the accidents caused by disregarded stops as well as
speeding cars through the intersection, according to city engineering officials.
