Qualls discussed laith the Board the advisability of hiring a fire alarm operator to go into training in the Fire Alarm Station. It was taY.en under advisement. John Vigh� a fire alar�n operator� requested that he be allo�red to take no vacation this year and four weeks vacation next year due to conditions of health. He was granted permission to talce his 19�+8 vacation ne;;t year on condition that he is still er�ploye& by the city and no intervening legisla- tion prohibits this. The follouring men 1•rere sent to take physical exa�inations given by the City Doctor and the Doctor appointed by the Fire�en' s Pension Fund Trustees preparatory to their appoint*�ent on the Fire Depart^�ent: Lester E, VanDe�rlalle� James Alexander Htunphrey and llalter Lloyd Butler. Mr. -Butler ;' to be placed as a fire alarz� operator. The following men having passed physical exar�inations given by the City Doctor and the Doctor appointed by the Firemen' s Pension Fund Trustees are no�r appointed as probationary nenbers for a period of six nonths� during which time they shall receive a salary as �embers on a probationary basis: John J. Pawlak to start June 2� Erwin ld. 14rob1etasY.i to start June 1 and Richard L. Sowala to start June 1. This being the date set for receiving bids for a car and a trucY, for the Fire Department� only one bid was received and it �•ras opened and read as follows: ' Scherman-Schaus-Freeman 1 19�+8 Studebaker Cor.imander �+ door Sedan as per specifications �2121.95 1 19�+9 Studebal:er R10 3/4 Ton red pickup truck as per specifications 1366.26 Trade in allowance for 1 1921 LaFrance Pickup truck and 1 1927 Studebaker big six �s125.00 each. Leave of absence for a period of six raonths cor.ur,encing the lst day of June� 19�+$ is hereby granted orith the understanding that failure of officer Crist to repQrt back to duty within the said period shall constitute a full �nd final resignation fro� the South Bend Police Department� t��itho�t the necessity of further notice to either party. Reverend Su�rall infor�ed the Eoa d that he orill erect a tent on Haney Street �ust East of t•iichigan ins�ead of rIichigan at Oakside as he previously requested. Helen Darnold� a clerk in the Police Depar�ment� tendered her resig- , nation from the departrr.ent effective July 1� 19�8. Her resignation was accepted. The Board authorized the cleaning and storing of the uniforms being worn by the women auxiliary police. HEALTH DEPARTAREPdT: The Clerk of the Board was authorized to advertise £or a car for the Health Departr:_ent. ELECTRICAL DEPARTAi�NT: Mr, 4�lillia� Qua11s�. Superintendent� was present and matters pertaining to his department ���ere discussed. . A petition t�ras received asking for .the installation of a street light at the intersection of Vassar and. Qualls informed the Board that lights ordered in� at ti�lestern Aven- ' ue znd Arnold Street� victoria Street at 'l�uryckenham Drive� St. Joseph Street and Ewing Avenue and those ordered in. at the John Adans Iiigh School Area had all been installed and o�ere noV� in service.
