Appl.ications for the Fire Department were received from James ��enry
Ba�tles, Julius Joseph Vadas, Clin�on Herbert Yazel, Harold Kichard Vlallace
, and Aubrey Ammon Rogers. These were ordered filed. .
Pt�LICE D�PARTf;IENT: Chief Everett v�ras present and matters pertaining to
his department mero discussed. .
The Chief as��ed permission to send ttivo men to the Traffic Controll
School being conducted at Northvrestern University from �ct;obor 29, 1945
to �lovember 17, 1945. The Board granted his request .
An application for a special Police Comrnision tiaas approved for John
R. Lutes and crAS ordered filed. A bond t�as also approved for l��r. Lutes
and �r�as ordered filed.
Applica�ions for the Police Departm�nt were received from Edward
'rJilliam Nietch, Eugeno Richard No�racze�vsl:i and Earl 's'�illiam Paffenbach
and Richard E. Murphy. These were ordered filed.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTI��IENT: T�Ir. '�Villiam Rua11s , Superintendent� was present
and matters pertaining to his department ��ere discussed.
1,4r. �ualls informed the �oard that the street light ordered in at the
intersection of '�"Jestern Avenue and Huran Stree� near Harris, had been
installed.
�'� petition yras received containin� 14 names asking for the installation
of a street light on Duey �venue about the middle of the blocl� betvreen Sou�h
Bend Avenue and the dead end of the �treet . This �ras referred to :,2r. Quall s
for investigation and report.
:�Zr. C�ualls subrnitted a report on the request for a street light at
Chapin and Donald Streets, and upon Pti2r. �ualls recorrLmendation, the Board
ordered the light instAlled, and directed T,Zr. �'�,ualls to apply for perrlis3ion
to ins�all same.
l:r. Qualls recommended tha� a street light be, installed a� the allev
inter sec�ion bet`•ieen Carrol and Colur.ibia Street s, and the Board approved
this ins�allation.

as of 'eptember 21, 1945 and tivas placed on sick leave.

The Fire Chief informed the Board that he had received a letter
from �ra A. Bennett , a �empoz°ary firer�an, requesting permission to leave
the department. The Board granted his request effective Q:c�ober 15, 1945.
The Chief requested permission to send t��:o men to Purdue University
Octol�er 23rd, 24th and 25th. The Board �ranted permission.
Upon r�otion duly made and seconded, the folloti�ring men vrere appointed
as regular members of the Fire Depart�nent subject to their ability to
pass a physical examination by the City and Pen�ion •Doctors, a nd the Chief
�ras instructed to send them to the Doctors for the required e�amination :
George John Tezich, Urban Patnaude, lo;elvin Iiic��e�T, Clerlent T,�larosz and
August ascar i�Taessens. .

to susperid �fficer Leo Berner on Thursday, �ictober 4, 194.5 at 3:30
p.m. for violation of Rule No. l� of Rules and Regula�ions of the South
Bend Police Department.
I informed Officer t3ernQr that he v�ould undoub�edl�r receive a letter from
the 3oard informin� him to appear for a trial a� a later date.

The Chief informed the Board that Richard Stic�.ley had repor�ed for
active duty after having pASSOd a physical exa�ination �iven b5r the Police
and City Doctors, effective Septer.iber 27, 1945, and also that John Kasprzak
vrould report for active dut� on October 16, 1945 after having passed the
, �eneral physical ehar�lination.
The Chief presented the follo`ving letter from Harr� DicIntyre, member
of the Police pepar�nant.
