SPE�IAL P�ZEETING September �3, 1945
A special meeting v�as held on Saturday, September 8, 1945 at 10:00
A.r�7. All members were present.
The meeting was called for the purpose of appoin�ing six new men to
the Police Department. These men having passed a physical examination by
the City Doctor and the Doctor appointed by the Pension Fund Trustees are
to report for duty P�Iond�y, September 10, 1945 and are to become regular
officers of the City of South Bend effective as of the day of their reporting
for duty, provided that they shall successfully pass a period of nine months
probation as special officers of said City. Salaries are directed to be
paid to these men in accordance with the regular schedule of the monthly
pay of officers on a probationary basis. The six men appointed are V'Jilliam
E. Nelson, Norman Esary, P�Zanual Sadural, Ra,mond D. t�2axson, Louis �rJ;lliam
Ka�fman and Paul TsicCarroll. Robert Claude Brown tivho had previously passed
his physical examination and been appointed to the Police Department ti^ras
also directed �a report for active duty on lJlonday, September 10, 1945.
The Board received from the P�4ayor the roport of the post-�var planning
committee .concerning the construction of a setivage disposal plant for the
city of South Bend.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was ad3ourned at 11:30 A.r�i. •

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on �Zonday,
September 10, 1945 at 10:00 A.rri. r,�r. Cummings was absent. P�Sinutes of the
last meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the amount of
�37,429.76 vrere a proved and ordered paid. Claims of the followin� suppliers
in the amount of �3,227.50 vrere approved and ordered paid:

George Geltz was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant effective Sept-
embar 16, 1945 to be assigned to duty by the Fire Chief.
The f ollowing men, members of' the South Bend Fire Department, are to
be ratired September 16, 1945 subject to the apprb�al of the Pension Fund
Trus�ees: John Henry, Harry Johnson, Charles Aldrich and l�7arion Dutrieux.
According to custom they will be paid to actober 1, 1945.
The Board directed the clerk to return the certified check which
accompanied the bid of the Fabric Fire Hose Company for fire hose which
has been received. .
Applications for the Fire Department were receivea from Leo Thomas
'Nallisch, Edmund Stanley Dobski and Ray Ellis �ieetQr and �ere ordered
filed.
PaLICE DEPAR'I'RZENT: Chief Everett was present arid matters pertaining to
his department were discussed. ,
Officer Sylves�er Zell who had prQViously asked to be allowed to
retire on pension, is to be relea�e�t fro� active duty as ot' September 23,
19�5,. sub�ect to the approval ot' the Pension Fund Trustees.
Applications for �he Police �epar�nen� Urere received from Alfred
Richard Pulaski, Arthur La�avrence Jacks and Joseph Lawrence Zurat. T,Zr.
PulasKi �s application was orderea filed, bu� the otner ttvo ti�rere rejected
because of lack of educational requirements.
ELECTRIC�'�L DEPARTlIIENT: Pdtr. yVilliam Qualis, Superintendent, tivas present
and mattal•s pertaining to his departr.lent ti�rere discussed.
A petition tivas received containing 67 names asking for a street ligh�
at the intersection of Falcon and Dunham StrQets. This tivas referred to
��Zr. Qualls for investigation and repor�.
TYie Board approved, upon ��qr. Qualls recommendation, the installation
of a stree� light at Bulla and Tr7edora Streets. l�.Sr. �ua11s was directed to
apply for permission to install same.
