The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Side Impact Crashworthiness Evaluation protocol was used as a guideline. SAE J17331, Sign Convention for Vehicle Crash Testing, was followed during the test. The side impact test was setup with the bullet vehicle's centerline aligned with the fore -aft cg location of the target vehicle, The bullet vehicle was propelled to speed with a trolley and then released, allowing the bullet vehicle to roll and impact the curb side of the target vehicle. Speed of the bullet vehicle was measured just prior to impact using a dual -beam laser speed trap. A thin rod was placed on the bullet vehicle"s bumper so that an identifying puncture in the target vehicle would provide post-test evidence to determine the actual impact point. Prior to the test, all fluids were removed from the vehicles. The air conditioning fluid was recovered from each vehicle per EPA requirements, 30A gallons (80% capacity) of waiter was added to the fuel tank of the target vehicle.
