Minutes of the previous meeting were read:and approved.
Claims from the foll.ov:�ing suppliers in the amaunt of ��146.85
were approve� and ordered paid:

FIRE DEPkRTTti�F.NT- Chief Freeh present:
The Chief reported that one of th.e inhalators used in the Fire
Department needed repairs whieh Vt�ere duthorized by the Board.
Applieation far a positian on the Fire Depart�lent was presented
by Ear1 J. Harman and ordered placed on file.
The Chief presented the 31st �nnua� Financial Sbatement of. the
Firer�en's Pension Fund, �,hov,ing �activities of 1937 and the cash po-
sition on January �1, 1938, which i�� ordered placed an file.
ELECTRIC�.L UEPARTI�iE1VT - Mr. �,ua�Is present:
Mr. �u�lls reparted that the v��arning si•gnuls at the Sr�mple and
Fello���s Street crossing of the Ne�v Yor� Centr�l are too ex�ensive to
operate electrically and recommended that fl��sh�rs be purchased Por
saic� inst�llat�on. Instructions were gitren to communicate v,�ith the
State Prison to see if they m�.nufacture a suitable flasher.
PaLICE DEP�HTI�iENT - Chief Lan e present:
The Chief presented a communication from the IndiGna Associa-
tion of Chiefs of Police, outlining a plan for the installation of
a Teletype���riter in the Folice Department. It was brought aut that
a member of the State Police Department w�i�I be in South Bend Feb-
ruary IDth to explain this matter. Defir_ite decision regarding the
installation af the te�etypev�riter was therefore postponed.
O��icer Ernest Busch made a report of an accident to Car Nu.21
as having come in cantact with a street car and Sample and I�ichigan
Streets. A report was also presented from the driver of the street
car. The Board instructed that the �fficers ir_ ear No. 21 be order-
ed to appear before th� Board at its next meeting to discuss this
matt er.
City Tra£fic �ngineer i�iller made a report of a number o�' loce-
tiQns v�here saPeguards v,ere neces:ary and after discussing this mat-
ter, the report not being co�plete, the Board ordered that such safe-
guard.s be erected as could be done v:�ithout purchase of v�arning signs.
The Street Derartment therefore was ordered to erect barricades at
Edgei^rater �nd T�onroe Streets, a.t Edge�tiater and Arch Avenue, �,.n.nd at
Lafayetf;e and North Shore Drive; �nd to continue the present type of
guard-rail 125 feet north and 50 feet south at Nile� Avenue and Cor-
by; also to repair the guard-rail cable at the east end of Hydraulic
Avenue bridge. Mr. �ualls was in�tructed to repair the dead-end elec-
tric light at North Side Blt*d. and Notre Dame Avenue. Also to re-
puir guard-rail along the river in the 13a0 block on Lincoln Way �as�.
� The Board discussed the physical condition of Officers Fred Ham-
` mer and gave instructions to the Chief to have Offic�r Hammer bring
in a report of his physical concition �nd recommendatxins by Dr. Paus-
zek before he be permitted to go back to xork.
A request �n�as received from �:estern Radio Service at �E35 Lincoln
ti'�Tay West for the establi�hment of a loading zone in front of their �
pl�ee of business. Having been referred to City Trafi'ie Fngin�er
MilZer and he recommending tha.t this be not established for the rea-
�on that there is a rear drive to the buildin� permitt� unloading
in the rear, the Boa.rd concurred and ordered th&t the Ra�io Shop be
so notii'ied.

Su�rety Bonds in favor of L. �. Kiester and �1'al.t er Nowicki v�lere--
presented, but there not, being a full�membership of the Board, Mr.
Zilmer having ta go to Indianapolis, the approval of these Bonds v��•as
w�thheld.
Continu�tion Certii'icates in favor of the follow3ng Police Of-
ficers were t�pproved by the Board:
